THREE MUSTANGS SELECTED TO GNAC WEEKLY HONORS
Three Mount Ida College athletes were selected as Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honors section this wee. Junior women's basketball forward Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) and sophomore men's volleyball middle blocker Thomas Belton (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) were honored for the first time this season as players-of-the-week for their outstanding individual performances during last week's contests. Freshman center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) was selected as rookie-of-the-week, her first honor of the season from the GNAC.
Parisi netted a career high 27 points along with 13 rebounds, three assists, and four steals in an 83-73 victory over visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Pine Manor College capturing the Mustangs second conference win of the season. Last Tuesday, Parisi recorded 19 boards and 13 points against visiting non-conference opponent Becker College winning 79-52. Parisi also leads the team in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (9.2) for the season. She has been an integral part for Mount Ida women's basketball this year and will continue to help her team notch victories as she races to the 1,000 point plateau, 62 points shy with four games to go.
Belton also enjoyed a stellar week in two matches against Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) GNAC division opponents with the Mustangs going 2-0 and riding a three game win streak. Mount Ida men's volleyball hosted their first GNAC opponent against Emerson College winning 3-2 (30-28, 30-24, 31-33, 26-30, 15-8) in exciting fashion last Wednesday (2/4/09). Belton hammered a career high 28 kills, 15 digs, and six solo blocks. The following Sunday, he powered the Mustangs to a 3-0 (30-12, 30-10, 30-17) bludgeoning against Albertus Magnus College notching 11 kills, six digs, and five total blocks. He leads his team in kills (85) and solo blocks (11) for the season and ranks second in digs (47). The Mustangs will travel to Providence, Rhode Island this coming Wednesday to face GNAC foe Johnson & Wales University starting at 7:00 p.m.
Morvan, in the past few contests, has become a very important part to the Mustangs rebounding and post game off the bench. She chipped in her first career double-double against Pine Manor College this Saturday with 10 points and 13 boards. Morvan also tallied 14 points and eight caroms in a victory over visiting non-conference Becker College this past Tuesday. The Mustangs will travel to neighboring Lasell College this Tuesday night for more GNAC action starting at 7:00 p.m.
