WEEK ONE ATHLETES-OF-THE-WEEK ANNOUNCED

 The Mount Ida College sports information department is pleased to announced week one's athlete's-of-the-week.   Every fall team this season will have a weekly player on their team selected as the "athlete-of-the-week" for their respective team along with the overall outstanding player as "mustang-of-the-week".  Here are this week's selections. 

DEVAN MEEKER - Freshman - Women's Soccer

Women's soccer freshman striker Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) has been named women's soccer athlete-of-the-week.  Meeker helped her team notch their first victory of the season a week ago this past Tuesday in the Mustangs home opener against Anna Maria College winning 2-1.  Meeker netted her first collegiate goal breaking a 1-1 tie to give the Mustangs the lead and eventually the victory.  Mount Ida will host Curry College this coming Thursday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m.

STEVEN ENRIGHT - Sophomore - Men's Soccer

Men's Soccer sophomore goalkeeper Steven Enright (South Kingston, RI/Prout) has been named men's soccer athlete-of-the-week.  Although the Mustangs have yet to capture a victory, Enright has had some very big shoes to fill with the departure of a very talented tandem of keepers, alumnus Brian Leighton and Kevin DosSantos.  Enright has racked up a total of 16 saves in two games last week, giving his team a chance to stay in the contest.   The Mustangs will host their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game this coming Saturday against Rivier College starting at 12:00 p.m.

DEVYN FRANK - Freshman - Women's Volleyball

Women's volleyball freshman middle blocker Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) has been named women's volleyball athlete-of-the-week.  Although the Mustangs have yet to capture a victory so far in 2009, Frank has been a huge asset for the Mustangs with her overwhelming presence in the front of the net standing at six feet, two inches tall.  In two matches last week she combined for 12 kills, six service aces, and six total blocks.  She will be a valuable player to the Mustangs success this season.  Mount Ida will travel to the Days Inn of Compton tournament this coming weekend at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire starting Friday at 4:00 p.m.

AMY WARNER - Freshman - Women's Tennis

Women's tennis freshman Amy Warner (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) has been named women's tennis athlete-of-the-week.  Warner is the first ever Mustang women's tennis player to be named athlete-of-the-week for her team.  She has a very impressive start to the season winning both her single and doubles matches this past Saturday in a 7-2 loss to the visiting non-conference Lynx from Lesley University.  Along with senior captain Jessica Lindquist Killingworth, CT/Haddam-Killingworth), the tandem captured the 8-3 doubles victory for the first win of the season for women's tennis.  Warner headed over to her singles match where she won her first ever collegiate singles match 6-4, 6-5 against Lily McCausland (Mad River Valley, VT/Harwood Union).  The Mustangs will host their first ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up this coming Saturday against Emerson College starting at 10:00 p.m.\

JELIEEN RIVERA - Sophomore - Women's Cross Country

Sophomore second year runner Jelieen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) has been named women's cross country athlete-of-the-week.  Rivera ran in the "Early Bird" Cross Country Co-ed Relay and Open 5K this past Friday afternoon coming in 15th place overall and seventh in the women's division with a time 24:37.  The Mustangs will travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy for the Travis J. Fuller Invitational starting at 10:00 a.m.
