WEEK FOUR ATHLETE'S-OF-THE-WEEK ANNOUNCED
Athlete's of the Week - WEEK FOUR
The Mount Ida College sports information department is pleased to announce week four's athlete's-of-the-week.
Women's soccer junior goaltender Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) has been named women's soccer athlete-of-the-week. Begins has played every minute between the pipes for the Mustangs so far this season saving a total of 52 shots in seven games. This past week Mount Ida traveled to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Albertus Magnus College losing 1-0 in dramatic fashion on a last second goal. Begins kept her team alive all game denying nine shots in 90 minutes of play. The Mustangs will travel to GNAC foe Emmanuel College this coming Tuesday starting at 7:00 p.m.
Men's soccer junior captain Hayato Kanesaka (Old Tappen, NJ/Northern Valley) has been named men's soccer athlete-of-the-week. Kanesaka scored two goals helping his team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over visiting Becker College last Tuesday. He also scored an amazing goal that was hammered from the top of the 18 yard box into the top right corner for the first goal in a 2-1 GNAC loss to visiting Johnson & Wales University this past Saturday. Kanesaka, who has become a very talented player since arriving on campus three years ago, is second in points for the Mustangs so far this season. Mount Ida will travel to Nashua, New Hampshire this coming Tuesday afternoon for non-conference action against hosting Daniel Webster College starting at 3:30 p.m.
Women's Cross Country sophomore standout Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) has been named women's cross country athlete-of-the-week. Rivera finished in 12th place with a time of 21:36 in the Elms College Blazers Invitational this past Saturday. The Mustangs will travel to Gordon College this Saturday for the annual Pop Crowell Invitational starting at 10:45 p.m.
Football freshman linebacker Michael Brockenberry (West Haven, CT/West Haven) has been named football athlete-of-the-week. Brockenberry recorded seven solo tackles, three tackle assists, and two tackles for a loss of eight yard this past Saturday in a 28-6 defeat at Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) rival Norwich University. He has been a solid addition to the Mount Ida football family's defensive scheme so far this season and they will look for Brockenberry to continue his outstanding play throughout 2009. The Mustangs will host Castleton State College this Saturday on homecoming at Mount Ida College starting at 1:00 p.m.
Women's tennis junior captain Jessica Lindquist (Killingworth, CT/Killingworth-Haddam) has been named women's tennis athlete-of-the-week. Although the Mustangs failed to win a match against the top two teams in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), Lindquist and her teammates fought exceptionally hard during these matches. As a first year program, Head Coach John Nestel and his squad have proved they will become a solid program throughout the years with Lindquist at the forefront for the next two seasons until she graduates. The Mustangs will travel to Pine Manor College for another GNAC match-up this coming Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
