SOPHOMORE KEITH JONES CLEANS UP IN WEEKLY AWARDS
Mount Ida College men's basketball sophomore Keith Jones (Boston, MA/Cathedral) has been named this week's Mustang-of-the-week as well as Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player-of-the-Week. Jones was also selected as the division III New England Co-Player-of-the-Week for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). This was the first time this season that any basketball player has received this prestigious honor. The last Mount Ida College athlete to be recognized as ECAC Player-of-the-Week came during the 2009 football season (Johrone Bunch).
Jones led the Mustangs to a perfect 3-0 week in GNAC play with victories over Lasell College (81-79), Emmanuel College (94-69), and Norwich University (91-89 OT). Jones netted over 20 points in every game played last week with 24 against the Lasers, a season high 37 points against the Saints, and 26 against the Cadets this past Saturday. Jones was near perfect from the free throw line going 22-23 in three games and has an amazing .915 percentage from the charity stripe for the year.
Jones has been electric all year for his team turning heads all over New England with numerous outstanding individual performances that has helped the Mustangs charter one of their best seasons in 10 years. Jones ranks 17th in the NCAA division III men's basketball statistics for points per game (21.6), 11th in three point field goals per game (3.3), and 56th in three point field goal percentage (38.5).
His most impressive statistic for the season is his 91.5 free throw percentage good for fourth in all of NCAA division III play so far this season.
Jones ranks third in the GNAC in scoring (21.6 ppg) behind two of the most prolific scorers in the conference (Ray Askew - Albertus Magnus, Lamonte Thomas - Johnson & Wales University). He ranks number one over in the conference for free throw percentage going 97-106 good for 91.6 percent.
This is the first season Mount Ida men's basketball has been over .500 since joining the GNAC. Their 13 overall victories this year is the most they have had since the 2000-2001 season (18) when they won the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship over Lasell.
The Mustangs will travel to Emerson College this coming Thursday night for more GNAC action starting at 7:00 p.m.
