MEN'S BASKETBALL NAMED MUSTANG-OF-THE-WEEK
The Mount Ida College men's basketball team has been selected as this week's Mustang-of-the-Week. In a solid 3-0 week, the Mustangs not only notched their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory last Tuesday with an 88-83 win over Emmanuel College, they captured the 2009 Eastern Nazarene College Classic Tournament title with a 102-80 victory over Mitchell College Saturday evening.
The Mustangs started their conference schedule off on the right foot last Tuesday with a very important early season victory over visiting Emmanuel. Down 13 points at halftime, the Mustangs scored an amazing 58 points in the second half to capture the victory. Mount Ida sophomore guard Keith Jones (Boston, MA/Cathedral) went 6-10 from beyond the three point arc netting a game high 33 points. Mount Ida saw every starter in double figures, led by Jones, with senior Darren Martinez (Dorchester, MA/Brookline) and sophomore Isiah Benjamin (Windsor, CT/the Masters School) chipping in 10 points apiece and Martinez dishing out eight assists. Mustang sophomore Travis Hillery (Tyngsboro, MA/Central Catholic) was solid notching his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 caroms. Sophomore Joe Cabral (Walpole, MA/Walpole) also added 13 points going 3-4 from downtown and grabbing five boards.
Mount Ida men's basketball headed into the weekend to participate in the Eastern Nazarene College 2009 Tournament Classic facing non-conference New England College in the opening round. The Mustangs cruised to an 81-71 victory to catapult them into the title game of the tournament. Jones led the Mustangs and all scorers for the contest with 19 points on 4 for 11 shooting, going three of eight from behind the arc and smooth 8-9 from the charity stripe. Teammates Benjamin and Hillery followed suit with 14 points each in the win. Martinez was also solid tallying 10 points with six boards and six assists.
In the championship game against non-conference Mitchell College, the Mustangs crushed the Mariners by 22 points winning 102-80 to capture the 2009 ENC Classic. Mount Ida made it look easy shooting a solid 47 percent from three-point land and 60 percent from the floor during the victory. Every starter for the Mustangs were in double digits for points with Benjamin and Hillery leading the way with 17 apiece with Hillery chalking up his second double-double of the year with 10 caroms. Martinez and sophomore Johrone Bunch (Meriden, CT/F.T. Maloney) also added 16 points and seven rebounds each combining for five assists. Jones added 13 points of his own going 3-5 from downtown.
Mount Ida men's basketball has a huge GNAC match-up Tuesday night against visiting Emerson College starting at 6:00 p.m. The Lions beat the Mustangs last season in a heartbreaking buzzer beating three-pointer by Emerson guard Jeremy Shannon at the end of regulation last season when the Lions visited Mount Ida. The Mustangs will look to erase that memory TONIGHT! BE THERE!
