GNAC BASKETBALL ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS ANNOUNCED
The Mount Ida College Athletics department and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) are pleased to announce your Mount Ida basketball Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) all-conference selections for the 2010/2011 season.
Mount Ida College women’s basketball junior transfer Shannon Wood from Gorham, Maine was selected to the GNAC second team all-conference. Wood transferred from Division I Bryant University and created an immediate impact at point guard for the Mustangs. This year Wood led Mount Ida to a 9-17 record and helped the Mustangs capture their first ever berth into the GNAC post-season tournament under the direction of third year head coach Jack Casey. Wood led the Mustangs with 13.2 points per game good for 10th overall in the conference. Wood also led the GNAC in assists per game averaging 4.4 a contest and was eighth overall in three point shooting (35 %). She was also impressive from the line shooting 79 percent for the season. Wood was second on the Mustangs in steals tallying 63 for the year. Wood went for 20 points five times and had a career high 25 points in a 70-58 non-conference victory against Wentworth College. One statistic that should not go unnoticed is that out of a possible 1,055 minutes that were played Wood played in 1026 of them.
Mount Ida College men’s basketball junior captain Isiah Benjamin from Windsor, Connecticut was selected to the GNAC third team all-conference. This is his first all-conference honor during his three year career as a Mustang. Benjamin led the Mustangs to a 9-17 and helped them gain a berth into the GNAC post-season tournament for the second consecutive year falling to St. Joseph College of Maine in the opening round. Benjamin led the Mustangs in points per game with 17.4 good for fourth overall in the conference. Benjamin also was tied for fourth in the GNAC averaging 3.2 assists per game and was eighth overall in free throw percentage at 78 percent. Benjamin was second on the team in steals with 33. Isiah’s numbers drastically rose this year going from 9.0 point per game his sophomore year to 17.4 this season. Isiah now has 737 points and is well on his way to 1000. Isiah was held under 10 points twice all year and scored 20 plus in eight contests and had a career high 29 points in a conference defeat to Albertus Magnus College.
Mount Ida College men’s basketball junior transfer David Gibbs from East Hartford, Connecticut was selected to the GNAC second team all-conference. Gibbs was impressive handling the ball all season for the Mustangs coming to Mount Ida as a transfer from Division 1 UMASS-Amherst. Gibbs was second on the team in scoring and sixth overall throughout the GNAC averaging 17.2 points per game shooting 45 percent from the floor for the season. He also led the Mustangs in assists with 119 for the year good for third in the conference statistics putting him fourth in the Mount Ida record books for assists in a season. Gibbs led Mount Ida in steals as well swiping 38 attempts for the season. David’s best game of the season offensively came against GNAC neighboring rival Lasell College on February 15th when he poured in 31 points on 11-16 shooting winning 106-82.
Mount Ida women’s basketball freshman Abbey Fedigan from New Fairfield, Connecticut and Mount Ida men’s basketball senior Brian Hapgood from Braintree, Massachusetts were both honored with the GNAC sportsmanship awards.
