JUNIOR MATT SAVAGE NAMED MUSTANG-OF-THE-WEEK

Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse junior attackman Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) has been named this week’s Mustang-of-the-Week.  Savage picked up right where he left off in 2009 tallying seven goals in two games in a 1-1 week for the Mustangs.

Savage netted two scores in a 7-6 loss to hosting non-conference Curry College in the season opener in Milton, Massachusetts last Wednesday afternoon.   The Mustangs turned it around the following Saturday with a solid 12-11 win against hosting UMASS-Dartmouth in another non-conference match-up.  Savage, who tallied five goals in the contest, scored the game winner with 44 seconds remaining in overtime willing his team to victory snatching their first win of the season.

Savage, who set the Mount Ida men’s lacrosse single season record for goals in a season last year with 57, will be a vital part to the Mustangs success in 2010 with the loss of alum’s Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) and Leo Shidler (Peabody, MA/Peabody).  Savage was ranked in 23rd place in all of NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse for goals in a season in 2009.

The Mustangs will travel to Kean University this coming weekend for more non-conference action starting at 1:00 p.m.  Mount Ida men’s lacrosse has faced the Cougars the past three seasons and have yet to notch a victory.
