MCALLISTER, MEEKER, MITCHELL - MUSTANG-OF-THE-WEEK

Three Mount Ida College student-athlete’s from two different spring sports have been named this week’s Mustangs-of-the-Week.    Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse sophomore Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy), and freshmen Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) and Danielle Mitchell (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional) from the Mount Ida College softball program were the student-athlete’s selected for the award this week.

McAllister, who was also named North Atlantic Conference (NAC) player-of-the-week, is recognized for the first time as Mustang-of-the-Week in his career.  In two games in a 1-1 week for the Mustangs McAllister denied 26 opposing shots.  Last Thursday Mount Ida hosted non-conference and Little East Conference (LEC) powerhouse Eastern Connecticut State University falling 11-6.  The Mustangs would have lost by much more if McAllister hadn’t stopped 15 Warrior shots showcasing some amazing point blank saves.  McAllister and the men’s lacrosse would then host NAC rival Castleton State College last Saturday for the first time since the 2008 season.  The Mustangs were again solid, backed by another huge performance by McAllister with 11 saves, for the 10-8 conference win.

Meeker had her best week of the season going a perfect 4-0 pitching, three of which were Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) wins, from the mound in every start she made in a 5-1 week for the Mustangs.  Meeker went 28.0 total innings on the mound with six appearances surrendering 20 hits, four earned runs, and whiffing 16 batters.  Her bat also did not go unnoticed notching eight hits, four doubles, and an RBI in six games played.

Mitchell was an offensive juggernaut for her squad in six games played notching 10 hits, 13 runs batted in, six doubles, and a triple with no strikeouts batting .556 for the week.  Mitchell has been an outstanding addition to the Mount Ida roster this year and will continue to be a huge offensive threat.

The Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse team will host St. Joseph’s College (ME) in another NAC match-up this Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m.

The softball team will travel to Emmanuel College Saturday for another GNAC double dip starting at 12:00 noon.
