JOHRONE BUNCH NAMED ECFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
For the second consecutive week Mount Ida College football senior running back Johrone Bunch (Meriden, CT/F.T. Maloney) has been selected as the Offensive Player-of-the-Week for the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) after an impressive individual performance against visiting league member Castleton State College on senior day.
Bunch has also been named this week’s Mustang-of-the-Week for the Mount Ida College athletic department.
Bunch haunted the Spartans with 219 rushing yards and four touchdowns en route to a 54-34 league victory Saturday afternoon on a blustery day in Newton, Massachusetts. Bunch also tied his own record for rushing touchdowns in a season (13) that he's conquered three times throughout his career (2009, 2010, and 2011).
Bunch, who was awarded the Boston Globe Gold Helmet award following a career performance in 2009 against the Spartans with 351 yards on the ground and five touchdowns, led the Mustangs offensively with one of his best performances of the year.
Bunch mirrored his stat totals from 2009 which were impressive to say the least. He is third in the country for overall rushing and number one overall in the conference by a landslide in all rushing statistical categories for 2011.
Bunch and eight other football players were honored this Saturday on senior day for their contributions to the program throughout their tenures with the team. Bunch, who is a four year starter and team captain for the Mustangs, has been hands down the most feared player to any opponent as the biggest threat on the Mustangs roster since his first collegiate game. Bunch has etched his name in the Mount Ida books as one of the most recognized players in the history of the program.
Bunch is the programs all-time rushing leader with 4,464 yards from scrimmage and the all-time career leader in rushing touchdowns (47). Bunch is also the all-time leader in rushing yards a game (124.0), touchdowns scored (48), total points scored (266 – 47 TD, 1 PAT), all purpose yards (4,809), all purpose yards/game (133.8), punt yards (4,197), and punt attempts (126).
He holds multiple season records including rushing yards (1,506-2009), rushing attempts (278-2009), rushing touchdowns (13-2009, 2010), rushing yards/game (150.6-2009), average yards/punt (36.9-2009). He also holds numerous individual game records including most carries/game (49), most rushing touchdowns/game (6), and longest punt (72).
Along with being selected as a pre-season All-American and a Gold Helmet recipient in 2009, Bunch was named the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference’s (ECFC) Offensive Player-of-the-Year that same year. He is a two-time ECFC First Team All-Conference player (2009, 2010) as a running back and the team’s punter. At the end of the 2009 season, Bunch was selected to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s (ECAC) Division III All-Stars team as well as the New England Football Writer’s Division II/III All-Star team. He was named ECFC Offensive Player-of-the-Week twice in 2009 and now twice in 2011. Bunch was also named by fourth year Head Coach Michael Landers as the team’s Most Valuable Player following the 2009 season.
Bunch and the Mustangs have qualified for their second consecutive post-season berth and will compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) North Atlantic Bowl this Saturday against hosting Endicott College with game time to be announced.
