MUSTANGS DROP TO HUSSON, 39-13
The Eagles rolled to a 39-13 win over visiting Mount Ida College
(1-3) on Homecoming Weekend. Husson used a ground game which racked
up 300 yards and the Eagle defense recorded 9 sacks and 15 plays
for lost yardage.
Husson opened the scoring with 4:52 to play in the first quarter on
a 13 play 80 yard drive with all but 6 yards on the ground. Julius
Williams (SO, Boston, MA) scored from 4 yards out. Darren Gauthier
(JR, Brunswick, ME) missed the extra point.
Mount Ida responded four minutes later when quarterback
P.J. Mathews (Baltimore, MD/Patterson)
scrambled 7 yards for a touchdown. The drive was helped by a pass
interference call which negated a Keith Runne (JR,
Jefferson Township, NJ) interception.
Bobby Cordosa (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton)
put the Mustangs on top 7-6 with the extra point.
The Eagles would rattle off three unanswered touchdowns to take
control of the game. Two would come in the second quarter.
Defensive tackle Brandon Harris (SO, Danbury, CT) made a great play
as he tipped a Mathews pass at the line of scrimmage and pulled it
in, returning it 47 yards for a touchdown. Bryan Ferguson (SO, New
Britain, CT) scored his first of three touchdowns with 6:18 to go
in the half, pushing the Eagles lead to 19-7 at the half.
Husson almost added to the halftime lead when Bobby Gilbert (SO,
Beaver Cove, ME) intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards to the
Mount Ida 10 yard-line. Husson failed to capitalize as the Mustangs
blocked a 25 yard field goal attempt by Gauthier as time
expired.
The ground game went back to work at the start of the second half.
Husson took the opening possession 5 plays, 52 yards in just 1:52.
Ferguson had one run of 21 yards and finished the drive with a 23
yard touchdown run. Gauthier added the extra point to make it 26-7.
Ferguson finished with 152 yards on 23 carries and 3
touchdowns.
Husson defense continued to put pressure on Mount Ida star
quarterback racking up 9 sacks 6 coming in the second half. But
Mathews put together a scoring drive on Mount Ida’s first
possession of the second half. The key play in the drive was a 33
yard completion down the right side to Kyle Watkins
(New Haven,CT/James Hillhouse) taking them down to
the 2 yard line. Mathews scored on a quarterback keeper for the
touchdown, the kick failed making it 26-13.
Ferguson and Williams both added touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Williams finished with 95 yards on 17 carries. Husson out gained
Mount Ida on the ground 300 yards to 22 yards. Most of that as a
result of the 9 sacks.
Ross Salvovitch (SR, Derry, NH) paced the defense with 10.5 tackles
(7 solo), including 5 for losses of 28 yards and 1.5 sacks. Rameal
Barton (JR, Danbury, CT) added 7 tackles (6 solo) while Gilbert had
4.5 tackles (1 sack and 1 interception). The defense limited the
ground attack forcing the Mustangs to the air.
Mathews finished 21-31 for 198 yards and 2 interceptions.
Charlie Kelly (West Haven, CT/West Haven)
and Timmy Dorsey (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe
Woodbury) both had 7.5 tackles.
Husson quarterback John Chappell (SR, Fryeburg, ME) was 6-12 for 74
yards. Andre Wildman had 3 catches (JR, South Plantation, FL).
Mount Ida will host Utica College on Saturday, October 6th, for a
1:00 p.m. start.
