MUSTANG FOOTBALL GALLOPS TO SECOND VICTORY
Mustang junior wide receiver Kyle Watkins (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) hauled in three touchdown catches for 101 yards receiving to lead Mount Ida (2-1) past Becker College (2-2) 34-19 in Worcester, MA this Saturday. Watkins has snagged seven TD grabs so far this season, good for 367 yards receiving. The Mustangs continue their dominance over the Hawks remaining a perfect 4-0 in the career record books. Mount Ida would improve their season record to 2-1 heading into their homecoming against Husson College this approaching weekend. Becker drops their second consecutive loss with their record falling to 2-2 on the year.
Becker won the opening coin toss, only to defer to Mount Ida. The Hawks tried to surprise the Mustangs with an onside kick, but the ball didn't bounce on the wet turf and the Mustangs recovered.
Both teams battled for field position on their first two drives. On the Mustangs fifth possession, quarterback Tony Tokarz (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) connected with Watkins for a 55 yard touchdown pass, their first hook up of three on the day.
On the next Becker possession, running back Paul Casmir fumbled the hand off from quarterback Gabriel Prophet. Mount Ida defensive lineman Deven Constant (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford) recovered the fumble on the Becker 33 yard line giving the Mustangs solid field position.
On the ensuing drive, Tokarz sought out Watkins for the second time, this one coming on a 13 yard touchdown pass, putting Mount Ida up 13-0. After both teams exchanged punts, Mount Ida fullback Paul Shaughnessy (Malden, MA/Northeast Regional) took a handoff 54 yards down field for a touchdown making it 19-0 in favor of the visitors.
The Mustangs sealed the victory when Becker quarterback Gabriel Prophet was intercepted by Theo Cummings (Natick, MA/Natick) who returned the pick 67 yards for another Mustangs TD, blowing it open even more, leading 27-0.
Becker running back Jacques Philippe ran a 51 yard handoff to the Mount Ida two yard line, Paul Casimir dove in for the Hawks first score of the game.
Unfortunately for the hosts, Mount Ida answered back on their next drive when Watkins caught his third and final touchdown of the game, this one from 33 yards from Tokarz. The Mustangs took a 34-7 lead into halftime.
In the second half the Becker defense held the Mustangs scoreless. Karrone Stanley stepped in for the injured Gabriel Prophet and delivered a 50 yard touchdown pass to Acie Johnson. In the fourth quarter, the Hawks struck again when Sam Leahy jumped between two Mount Ida defenders to pull down a 26 yard TD.
The Mount Ida defense was led by McCummings who had four tackles and an interception return for a touchdown, his first TD of the season. The Becker defense was led by John Dutchich who had 5 tackles, two of which were for a loss.
Shaughnessy led the Mustangs rushing attack with 118 yards and one score. Becker quarterback Karrone Stanley led all passers with 120 yards and 2 scores.
Mount Ida will head back to campus and get ready for homecoming weekend against Husson College October 4, 2008 with kickoff starting at 1:00 p.m.
