NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College and Nichols College were level on nearly all aspects of the scoresheet on Friday afternoon, as the teams played their 2017 field hockey season opener at Alumni Field.
The only real difference, and the only one that mattered, was the 1-0 score-line in favor of the visiting Bison, accomplished through a goal from freshman forward Carlee Tolley (Chatham, Mass.).
Mount Ida (0-1) got four saves from keeper Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, Maine), and were level with the Bison on shots, with each team having eleven attempts.
The decisive blow came at the 22:56 mark of the first half, when Tolley collected a ball that was running away from her down the left wing and lobbed a backhand flip that just sailed over the outstretched arms of Ryan, who turned in a fantastic effort to keep the game scoreless earlier in the half when she dove to her right to stop a penalty stroke attempt from Courteney White (Orange, Mass.).
Bison sophomore Brooke Misbach (Guilford, Conn.) made three saves against the Mustangs, who will look to bounce back with another home game against Becker on September 5th at 6:00 PM.
At the same time, Nichols will be on the road again, travelling to Worcester to take on Clark.
