MEN'S BASKETBALL NETS THIRD GNAC VICTORY AGAINST SUFFOLK UNIVERSITY, Junior Otis Thompson Scores a Career High 30 Points
Junior center Otis Thompson (Gardner,
MA/Gardner) had a career game with 30 points, 11
boards, and seven blocks leading the Mount Ida College Men’s
Basketball team to a 100-90 victory over Suffolk University
Thursday night. The Mustangs would notch their third Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win (3-3) and better their
overall record to 6-7 on the year. The Rams would drop to 2-12, 1-6
in the GNAC.
Mount Ida went up early with a 6-5 advantage in the first two
minutes of the contest, but the visitors would jump ahead leading
by as many as 10 with 9:10 until the break. The Mustangs chipped
away and kept it close with solid defense and well executed play.
While the Rams led most of the way, MIC would pull ahead with 2:00
showing on the clock up 48-46. They exchanged baskets toward the
closing minutes and Suffolk would gain the lead back before the
break up one, 52-51. The Mustangs would shoot well from inside the
arc at 54 percent going 39-72 from the floor while the Rams
followed at 41 percent.
It would be an interesting second half with Mount Ida pulling away
early in the action and maintaining the lead with key turnovers
that were converted into baskets. The game was very tight
throughout the rest of the game with the Mustangs only up by as
many as six towards the end of regulation. The entire contest was
dominated by the fast break on both sides of the ball with Suffolk
keeping it close with the three pointer shooting 45 percent from
outside. The hosts tired out the competition towards the end taking
a 10 point advantage with 42 seconds on the clock and would
maintain the lead for the rest of the contest.
The Mustangs would get outstanding performances with three other
players in double figures. Gino Dipietro (Westbrook,
ME/Westbrook), Thomas Belton
(Springfield, MA/Springfield Central), and
Michael Dunham (Salem, NH/Salem) would
combine for a total of 38 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore
transfer Darren Martinez (Stoughton, MA/Brookline)
would nearly miss the first triple-double of the season dishing out
10 assists, 11 boards, and six points.
The Rams were led by junior forward Brian Small (Stoughton,
MA/Stoughton) who netted a team high double-double with 29 points
and 12 boards. Sophomore guard Alan Jaziri (Norwich, CT/Norwich
Free Academy) would drop in 20points keeping his team close in the
second half with solid guard play.
The Mount Ida Men’s Basketball team will travel to St.
Joseph’s of Maine this Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
