SENIOR JIMMY DRISCOLL NETS CAREER HIGH 17 ON SENIOR DAY IN LOSS TO ST. JOSEPH'S (ME), 79-70

Senior guard Jimmy Driscoll (Dennis, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) netted a career high 17 points on Senior Night in a tough 79-70 loss to St. Joseph’s College (ME) tonight at Mount Ida Athletic Center. The Mustangs would drop their overall record to 7-17, 4-13 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, while the Monks bettered to 12-11, 10-6 in the GNAC.

It would be all about St. Joe’s in the first half building a game high 22 point advantage in the first 12 minutes of the contest up 30-8 handing the Mustangs a tough challenge to conquer early on. The Monks would pile on an 18-0 run to start the game holding MIC to only one basket the first seven minutes of competition. But Mount Ida would not give up their efforts awakening the offensive while beginning to chip away at the lead cutting it to 15 with St. Joe’s up 38-23. The teams would eventually head into the locker room with visitor holding a 17 point margin at 26-43.

The hosts would flirt with a comeback on numerous occasions in the second half starting immediately within the first six minutes trailing 39-49 on a three pointer by Driscoll. The Monks wouldn’t waste time recovering, boosting their lead to 21 up 65-44 on a jumper by freshman Chris Davis (New York, NY/Hyde School). But the magic of senior night would not evade Driscoll and the Mustangs while he capitalized on a shot from downtown making it an eight point deficit trailing 68-60. The visitors would have too big of a lead with not enough time for Mount Ida to make another run.

The Mustangs were led by Driscoll who scored 17 points along with some outstanding plays on defense tallying two steals and going 3-4 from the arc. Sophomore point guard Darren Martinez (Stoughton, MA/Brookline) would continue to play well netting 10 while Junior Matt Bennett (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) pounded the boards with 11 points and six boards.

The Monks shot 54 percent from downtown on an impressive 12-22 shooting along with three players in double figures. Alberto Rue (Jamaica Plain, MA/Loomis-Chaffee) had the game high in points dropping in 19 with four boards with his teammates Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY/Albany Academy) and Davis combining for 24.

Mount Ida Men’s Basketball will head to GNAC rival and neighbor Lasell College for their last game of the season this Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
