MUSTANGS LOSE A HEARTBREAKER, 85-83, Michael Dunham Drains 8 three pointers

The Mount Ida College Men’s Basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Brooklyn Polytechnic, 85-83, in a physical match-up that came down to the final 10 seconds of the game. The Mustangs would drop their season record to 1-3 overall as the Fighting Blue Jays would improve to 1-1.

Senior Tyree Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Engineering) hit a jumper with the final seconds expiring for the two point win and their second victory of the season. The Mustangs got some great performances from Junior Michael Dunham (Salem, NH/Salem) who dropped in a game high 24 points including seven three’s in the first half to keep his team alive. Dunham, who ended with eight from downtown, was one triple away from tying the all time record for three’s in a game set by Josh Didick back in 2004 against Johnson State.

The Fighting Blue Jays led by as many as 12 late in the second half, but Mount Ida came storming back to get within one with 1:20 left in the game. The Mustangs went ahead when Junior Gino Dipietro (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) drained one from downtown on the left side of the baseline for the 83-82 lead. Mount Ida would foul and the visitors would split the one and one to tie the game. After a timeout, the ball was in bounded and Williams hit a shot from the lane with under five seconds remaining. The Mustangs would have little time as Dipietro sped up court but the ball was knocked out of bounds as time expired.

Mount Ida would also get some outstanding performances from Junior center Otis Thompson (Gardner, MA/Gardner) who recorded his first double-double of the season with 17points and 11 boards. Sophomore transfer Darren Martinez (Mattapan, MA/Brookline/UMass – Dartmouth) would show off his defensive skills and determination with two key steals late in the game and totaled nine points. Bruce Cary (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle) would continue to run the court well and show his incredible passing skills tallying eight assists, nine points, and eight rebounds.

The Fighting Blue Jays also had some great individual performances by Senior forward Thomas Young (Athens, Greece/T.A.S.I.S) who would drop in 13 points with nine boards and Freshman guard Dan Benard (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee) would tally a team high 17 .

The Mustangs will stay home for their second home game of the season against Wheelock College this coming Thursday, November 29th, for a 6:00 p.m. start.
