MEN'S BASKETBALL BRINGS HOME TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP

Junior guard Dave Santos (Mattapan, MA/Ben Franklin Institute) scored 41 points to lead the Mount Ida College men's basketball team to their first New England College tournament championship against Fisher College this Sunday winning 88-77.  Santos would break the school record for points scored in a game surpassing alumni Josh Didick '04 who netted 40 points at Johnson State College on February 22, 2004.  He would also tie alumni Doug Williams '06 for free throws made in a game with 12.  In two games over the weekend, Santos tallied a total of 54 points, eight boards, five steals, and six assists and shot 52 percent from the floor for the tournament.   Santos was named the tournament most valuable player while freshman Jeff McNair (Brockton, MA/Brockton), who notched 20 points in game one, was selected to the all-tournament team.  The Mustangs open their 2008-09 season with two victories and take home their first piece of hardware on the year with the victory.  Mount Ida is now 2-0 heading into non-conference action at Eastern Nazarene College this Wednesday with tip-off coming at 7:00 p.m.

Fisher led the entire first half building a substantial 12 point advantage midway through with 9:46 before the horn up 25-13.  Santos turned up the offense for the Mustangs nailing two jumpers, the second coming off a three point play on a foul, cutting the lead to seven at 25-18.  Junior Bruce Cary (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle) knocked down a free throw with 16 seconds remaining before the horn, cutting the Fisher advantage down to three at 29-26 at the end of the first.

Mount Ida came out hot and took their first lead since the opening minute of the game on five Santos points, including a three pointer to start the scoring, up 31-29 at 19:01.  The Mustangs would then go on a 9-0 run with junior Darren Martinez (Mattapan, MA/Brookline) and Santos igniting the offensive strike, inflating their lead by 12 up 42-30.

With 4:59 to go in the second half, the Mustangs took a game high 18 point lead after a Santos free throw.  Mount Ida would not look back at this point sealing the deal in the final seconds coincidentally off two Santos free throws taking the 88-77 victory for the tournament championship.

On top of the game high 41 points, Santos went 12-17 from the field as well as 5-7 from behind the arc good for 71 percent.  He also was solid from the charity stripe going 12-14 for the game.  Senior center Otis Thompson (Gardner, MA/Gardner) was also a key player in the victory with 14 points and 13 caroms good for his first double-double of the year.  Freshman Travis Hillery (Tyngsboro, MA/Central Catholic) chipped in eight points with 10 boards.
