MUSTANGS TALLY THIRD STRAIGHT WIN OVER EASTERN NAZ
Junior forward Matt Bennett (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) scored a game high 26 points with nine caroms to lead the Mount Ida College men's basketball team past hosting Eastern Nazarene College 89-74 this past Wednesday night in non-conference action. The Mustangs are a perfect 3-0 so far this year heading into their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up on Saturday with Emerson College heading to campus. The Crusaders drop to 0-2 on the season.
It was back and forth for the opening 10 minutes of the first half with the visitors leading 16-14 on a Michael Dunham (Salem, NH/Salem) three pointer. The Mustangs slowly crept away from the Crusaders for the remainder of the stanza building a seven point lead at the 1:55 mark on a lay-up by junior Darren Martinez (Mattapan, MA/Brookline) up 35-28. The Mount Ida lead would eventually be cut down to four going into the break ahead 36-32.
The Mustangs opened the second half scorching hot going on a 34-9 run to take the outright 71-41 advantage with 9:41 to go in the game. Bennett netted 12 of the 34 points scored during the streak mostly off lay-ups underneath the basket and a handful of free throws. The Crusaders struggled, only shooting 29 percent in the second half going 10-34 from the field.
Although the hosts were able to crawl back from the huge deficit that was build upon them, there was no chance for a comeback. The Mustangs took home their third straight victory (89-74) coming into their home opener this coming Saturday afternoon. Mount Ida shot 42 percent from the floor for the game and 67 percent from the charity stripe with Bennett sinking 10-14 from the line.
Not only did Bennett have a great day, senior center Otis Thompson (Gardner, MA/Gardner) continues to provide solid play underneath the basket recording his second consecutive double-double tallying 15 points and 11 boards. Junior guard Dave Santos (Mattapan, MA/Ben Franklin Institute) controlled the game scoring 13 points and notching four assists.
The Mustangs will head back to campus for their home opener and first GNAC match-up against Emerson College with tip-off starting at 1:00 p.m on Saturday.
