MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTCHES SIXTH WIN OVER WILDCATS

Mount Ida College junior Matt Bennett (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) netted a team high 18 points with five rebounds to the lead the men's basketball team past visiting non-conference Wheelock College in a 75-56 victory Tuesday night. The Mustangs improve to 5-2 overall while the Wildcats drop to 2-4 on the year.
The visitors led once the entire game in the opening four minutes leading by four off two free throws by junior Sherard Robbins (Malden, MA/Malden) up 7-3. The Mustangs eventually erased the small Wildcat advantage and surged ahead by 10 points capped off by a Travis Hillery (Tyngsboro, MA/Central Catholic) lay-up leading 28-18 with 4:37 before the break.
Both teams exchanged baskets for the rest of the half while the visitors chipped away at the hosts lead. The horn sounded with the Wildcats hitting the last basket while time expired with the Mustangs leading by six points at 32-26.
It was pretty much over at this point with Mount Ida pulling away by 18 points at the 14 minute mark off an Isiah Benjamin (Windsor, CT/Masters School) three pointer up 54-36. The Wildcats pulled within 10 with 12 minutes to go, but the Mustangs powered up and regained the huge advantage up by as many as 16 on a Johrone Bunch (Meriden, CT/F.T. Maloney) lay-up with 5:09 remaining in the contest.
The Wildcats would not go away cutting the lead to 10 for a second time at the two minute mark trailing 66-56. But Mount Ida made it a game high 19 point lead off a steal and lay-up by sophomore Teddy Louis (Malden, MA/Malden) to seal the victory 75-56.
Along with Bennett, the Mustangs saw outstanding performances from Bunch netting 17 with three boards and two blocks. Junior Darren Martinez (Mattapan, MA/Brookline) notched 10 assists along with seven points. Benjamin and senior Michael Dunham (Salem, NH/Salem) combined for 16 points.
