MUSTANGS DROPS SECOND GNAC LOSS TO NORWICH

Senior forward Matt Bennett (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) registered 22 points and nine rebounds in a tough 86-79 loss to visiting Norwich University this Saturday.  It was the Mustangs second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss of the season while the Cadets tally their first GNAC victory of the year.  Mount Ida drops to 6-3 overall, 0-2 in conference play while Norwich improves to 3-7 on the year, 1-2 in the GNAC.

For the opening six minutes each squad exchanged baskets tying four times.  The Mustangs pulled ahead by two points off senior Michael Dunham's (Salem, NH/Salem) third three-pointer in four minutes up 16-14.  The Cadets knotted the score at 16-16 on an Antonio Davis (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) jumper.  After a quick turnover by the hosts, Norwich regained the advantage off a triple by freshman Andrew Menzie (Coral Glades, FL/Coral Glades) ahead by three up 19-16.  The Mustangs would not lead for the remainder of the contest.

It was close for the next four minutes with a six point margin separating the teams with 8:48 to go in the half finished off two free throws by freshman Robert Thurman (Edwards, California/Desert).  The Cadets kicked into high gear, going on a 3-9 run, pulling away by 16 points towards the end of the half with no answer from the Mustangs.

Mount Ida freshman Joe Cabral (Walpole, MA/Walpole) cut the advantage to nine on a three pointer with two minutes to go before the break trialing 35-46.  The visitors eventually led 51-37 going into the locker room.

The opening two minutes of the second was very quiet with neither team able to score a basket.  Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the visitors built a game high 19 point lead after two good free throws by freshman Joshua Cabrera (Providence, RI/Classical) at 60-41.

Mount Ida would not go quietly trying desperately to chop the advantage down enough to make a comeback.  It remained a double digit Cadets lead for most of the second half in a high powered, fast paced attack which ultimately tired both squads out.

With 3:10 to go in the half, the Mustangs mounted their final comeback of the game going on a 10-0 run slashing the advantage to four points at 79-74 gaining all the momentum. The visitors eventually held on desperately to the small margin and rode out the victory taking home the 86-79 win.  Free throws were a huge factor on the game with Mount Ida going 24-38 from the charity stripe for a measly 63 percent.  The visitors capitalized from the strip going 33-40 good for 82.5 percent.

Along with Bennett, the Mustangs saw solid performances from junior Darren Martinez (Mattapan, MA/Brookline) who tallied 11 points and five assists.  Freshmen Johrone Bunch (Meriden, CT/F.T. Maloney) and Isiah Benjamin (Windsor, CT/Masters School) chipped in 10 a piece while Dunham and Cabral combined for 17 points.

Norwich forward Thurman was a machine in the paint defensively with eight blocks along with 13 points and nine boards.  Cabrera netted a team high 20 points and two steals and 14 points and seven boards from Davis.  Sophomore Jaren Jeffcoat (Dallas, TX/Plano West) and freshman Darell Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Plano West) added 10 a piece.

The Mustangs will head to Emerson College this coming Tuesday for a re-match after a heartbreaking buzzer beater loss earlier in the season with tip-off coming at 5:00 p.m.
