MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT EMERSON 70-72

Leading by 13 points at halftime, the Mount Ida College men's basketball team let hosting Emerson College crawl back and eventually capture the 72-70 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory this past Tuesday night in Boston, Massachusetts. The Mustangs, who have yet to net a conference win at 0-3, fall to 6-4 overall. The Lions improve to 7-3 on the year, 4-0 in the GNAC good for second place behind Lasell College.
Mount Ida dominated the opening 20 minutes holding Emerson, the 2007-208 NCAA Division III shooting percentage champion, to just 33% shooting from the field. A good free throw shot by Travis Hillery (Tyngsboro, MA/Central Catholic) gave Mount Ida a 33-17 lead with 5:11 remaining in the half. Anthony Remais (Cranberry Township, PA) hit a jumper to pull Emerson within 14, but Joseph Cabral (Walpole, MA/Walpole) sunk the back end of a two shot foul to set the lead at 15. Two Remais free throws pulled Emerson within 13, but Michael Dunham (Salem, NH/Salem) buried a three-ball to send the lead back to 16 with 2:47 left. The teams traded baskets and free throws to end the half with Remais dropping a free throw with eight seconds remaining for the 13 point halftime deficit. In the half Mount Ida had a 10-3 point advantage off turnovers and dominated the paint by a 20-12 margin.
Emerson opened the second half with a layup by Nathan Firn (Waldesboro, NC), but Hillery added a layup of his own to give the Mustangs their largest advantage of the second half at 42-29. Emerson knocked the lead down to seven points following foul shots from Jeremy Shannon (Lowell, MA) and Bryan Rouse (East Greenwich, RI) with 17:02 remaining. Mount Ida twice managed to push the advantage to 11 points, the first time on a layup by Darren Martinez (Mattapan, MA) and took a 50-39 lead on a Hillery layup with 15:18 remaining. Emerson scored the next seven points on a Remais three, a Shannon layup, and a jumper by Rouse to pull within 50-46 with 12:59 left on the clock.
Johrone Bunch (Meriden, CT/F.T. Maloney) stopped the bleeding temporarily with a jumper, but Emerson completed a 14-2 run to take a 54-52 lead on a Firn trifecta. Bunch tied the game on a jumper and a traditional three point play by Teddy Louis (Malden, MA/Malden) gave the Mustangs a 57-54 lead. Rouse hit a jump shot to bring Emerson within a point, but a free throw by Matt Bennett (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) followed by a Louis layup pushed the Mustang lead to 60-54 at the 8:25 mark.
Two Rouse layups tied the score at 60 and Bennett hit one of two free throws to give the Mustangs their last lead of the night. Two Firn foul shots gave Emerson a 62-61 lead. A three point play by Remais gave Emerson a 64-61 advantage, but the Mustangs rallied with two free throws by Isiah Benjamin (Windsor, CT/Masters School), and a Bennett jump shot to tie the game at 65 with 4:12 left.
A jump shot by Rouse and a Shannon layup gave Emerson a lead the Lions would not relinquish, although Mount Ida pulled within one point with two minutes remaining and again with seven seconds left on a Bennett layup. Rouse hit one of two free throws to give Emerson a 72-70 lead, but a Bunch three-point shot at the buzzer was wide left.
For the Mustangs, Bunch dropped in 18 points, Bennett had 16, and Hillery scored 14. Bunch also had nine rebounds and seven assists.
The Mustangs will host GNAC foe Johnson & Wales University this coming Thursday night starting at 6:00 p.m.
