MEN'S BASKETBALL CRUISES TO 74-57 GNAC WIN OVER RIVIER

Mount Ida College sophomore guard Keith Jones (Boston, MA/Cathedral) went a perfect 16-16 from the foul line netting a game high 23 points in a 74-57 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over hosting Rivier College in Nashua, New Hampshire Tuesday night.  The Mustangs improve to 8-3 overall, good for a three way tie for second place at 3-1 in the GNAC standings.  The Raiders fall to last in the conference at 3-8 overall, 0-4 in the GNAC.

The Mustangs scored the opening six points of the contest capped off by three Jones free throws after a foul by Rivier beyond the three point arc with 15:43 to start the half.  It remained a close contest up until the end of the first stanza when the Mustangs pulled ahead by 16 points, the highest total of the half, finalized on a lay-in by freshman Jonathan Figueroa (Hartford, CT/Howell Cheney Tech.) leading 36-20 at the break.

The advantage was extended by Mount Ida to start the second half leading by 19 in the first two minutes of play capped off on a lay-up from sophomore Joe Cabral (Walpole, MA/Walpole) leading 42-23.  The Raiders chipped away at the huge deficit eventually cutting the advantage to 12 points (34-46) with 13:26 to go in regulation.

Unfortunately for River, Mount Ida had other plans inflating the lead to a game high 22 points after a lay-in by junior Teddy Louis (Malden, MA/Malden Catholic) up 69-47 at the 3:29 mark.  Head Coach Rico Cabral went to his bench at this point with the huge margin in place and eventually captured a very solid 74-57 victory over Rivier for their third GNAC victory of the season.

Along with a solid performance by Jones, Louis had his best outing ever in a Mount Ida uniform with 11 points and 10 caroms for his first double-double ever.  Senior captain Darren Martinez (Dorchester, MA/Brookline) chipped in 14 points with four assists as well.

Nick Bean (E. Longmeadow, MA) tried to keep his team in the game by leading the Raiders with 18 points while going 5-5 from the free throw line, but a 1-10 showing from downtown had the Raiders scrapping for too many long rebounds without any attempt for second chance points.  Joe Granato (Arlington, MA) chipped in with a double-double of his own with 12 points and 10 total rebounds.

The Mustangs will head to Albertus Magnus College this coming Thursday for more GNAC action facing the Falcons in New Haven, Connecticut with tip-off coming at 7:00 p.m.
