MEN'S HOOPS POWER FIFTH GNAC VICTORY OVER CADETS 86-78
Mount Ida College men's basketball sophomore Keith Jones (Boston, MA/Cathedral) scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Mustangs to their fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season past hosting Norwich University, 86-78, Monday evening at Andrews Hall in Norwich, Vermont. The Mustangs improve to 10-4 overall, one victory shy of tying last year's win total, and are tied for third place in the GNAC standings (5-2). The Cadets fall to 9-5 on the season, 4-3 in conference play.
Mount Ida sophomore Nick Lynch (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) added 10 points off the bench while senior Darren Martinez (Dorchester, MA/Brookline) notched 20 points. The Mustangs used a 10-0 run late in the second half to turn a 67-64 deficit at the 6:20 mark into a 74-67 lead with 3:05 to play. Norwich was unable to get any closer than four points the rest of the way as Mount Ida hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
Norwich was led by freshman Ryan Williams, who scored a team-high 17 points. Junior Cori Boston added 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Cadets, while junior Quincy Williams and sophomore Antonio Davis each added 11 points and eight rebounds apiece.
A three-pointer by Williams on Norwich's first possession of the game ignited a 7-0 run to start the contest. Mount Ida responded with a 23-4 spurt to move in front 23-11 at the 10:42 mark. A jumper and two more triples by Ryan Williams helped the Cadets reel off an 18-5 run over the next four minutes to give NU a 29-28 advantage with 6:10 to play before halftime. The game went back and forth over the final six minutes, and Mount Ida carried a 45-42 lead into the intermission after Lynch beat the buzzer with an offensive rebound put back.
Williams led all scorers in the first half with 15 points. Martinez paced the Mustangs with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes. Both teams shot very well from the floor in the first half with Norwich hitting 50.0 percent (15-of-30) of it shots and Mount Ida connecting on 51.9 percent (14-of-27) of its field goal attempts. Both squads knocked down five three-pointers in the first half.
Norwich began the second half on a 14-6 run to take a 56-51 lead at the 13:48 mark. A three-pointer by Jones and a lay-up by Martinez spurred a 9-4 spurt by Mount Ida that tied the score at 60-all with 9:55 to play. The game then see-sawed back and forth for the next four minutes with neither team enjoying a lead any greater than two points. A lay-in by Boston put Norwich in front 67-64 at the 6:20 mark, but the Cadets were held without a field goal for the next 4:14. Jones scored seven of Mount Ida's 10 points during the Mustangs' 10-0 surge that ultimately was the difference in the game.
The Cadets shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64) from the field in the game, while the Mustangs shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58). MIC made 30-of-44 free throws, while Norwich hit just 15-of-28 from the charity stripe.
The Mustangs will host GNAC foe St. Joseph's College (ME) this coming Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. in Newton, Massachusetts.
