MARTINEZ/JONES HONORED WITH ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTION
Mount Ida College men's basketball senior captain Darren Martinez (Dorchester, MA/Brookline) and sophomore Keith Jones (Boston, MA/Cathedral) were both named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) third team all-conference this Friday. This was the first time either of these players has been honored with this award.
Martinez enjoyed his last year with the Mount Ida men's basketball program transferring to the Mustangs after one season with the UMASS-Dartmouth Corsairs. This season was by far his best in the three years he spent with the team averaging 13.8 points per game as the second highest scorer on the team. Martinez averaged 4.8 rebounds per game and led the team in assists (131) for the season. Martinez was first overall in total assists in the GNAC and second overall in assists per game (5.0). He also ranked 13th in scoring in the conference and eight in field goal percentage (51%).
Jones came to the Mustangs after a one year stint with Massachusetts Bay Community College meeting all of the hype that was brought with him as a recruit. Jones, who ranked in the top three in scoring for most of the year in the GNAC, fell to the fifth spot at the end of the season (19.6 ppg). His most impressive statistic for the year was a free throw percentage of 87% good for first in the conference stats. He was 49th in scoring for all of NCAA Division III.
Mount Ida College men's basketball sophomore captain Joe Cabral (below) (Walpole, MA/Walpole) was honored with the individual Sportsmanship Award.
Congratulations to all of these student-athletes on these wonderful accomplishments.
