MUSTANGS DOWNED BY JEFFS IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team dropped their second consecutive loss to non-conference New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) powerhouse Amherst College, 17-5, this past Saturday in Western Massachusetts. The Mustangs held a 2-1 advantage after the first quarter with two quick goals, but unfortunately for Mount Ida, Amherst out-scored the visitors 9-1 in the second quarter to blow the game open. The Mustangs fall to 1-2 on the year and have yet to play a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest.
Although the Mustangs went ahead quickly leading 2-1 in the
opening quarter on goals by senior captains Brett Conley
(Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) and Leo Shidler
(Peabody, MA/Peabody) the second quarter proved to be the
difference in the game for Amherst. Senior Tim Thornton
(Garden City, NY) scored a trio of goals early in the frame. Rookie
Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) and Thomas McDonnell (Manhasset, NY)
each chipped in with a score as Amherst started the second quarter
with a 5-0 scoring run.
After a score by Mustang sophomore Matthew Savage (Peabody,
MA/Peabody) on an assist from Dan Harrington
(Westford, MA/Westford Academy) with 4:56 to play in the
quarter, Amherst closed the frame with another 4-0 run. The scoring
out-burst sent the Lord Jeffs into the halftime break with a 10-3
lead.
In the third quarter, the two non-conference foes alternated goals
including another Mount Ida score by Shidler. Amherst junior
midfielder J.T. Milone (Manhasset, NY) and McDonnell scored with:
43 and: 33 seconds remaining in the period going ahead 14-5.
The Lord Jeffs fired in the final three goals of the contest taking
home the 17-5 victory over the Mustangs.
The Mustangs were led offensively by Conley and Shidler, who
combined to finish with four goals and an assist. Junior
backstop Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT/Amity Regional)
blocked 15 shots for Mount Ida but let up 16 goals. Freshman
James McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy)
saw the final ten minutes in net stopping two shots.
Mount Ida men's lacrosse will head to Little East Conference (LEC)
powerhouse Eastern Connecticut State University this coming
Wednesday for more non-conference action starting at 4:00 p.m.
