MEN'S LAX DOWNED BY NON-CONFERENCE WARRIORS

Six unanswered goals by hosting Eastern Connecticut State University from the second into the third quarter put the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team in a hole they could not dig out of in a 14-7 loss Wednesday afternoon in Willimantic, Connecticut.  The Mustangs drop their overall record to 1-3 with their first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest of 2009 coming up against Johnson State College this Saturday.

In the first quarter each team exchanged goals with the Warriors striking first in the opening minute of the contest.  Mount Ida came right back with a score by senior captain Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) knotting things at 1-1 with 13:08 to go in the quarter.

After another goal by the hosts to regain the lead (2-1) Conley countered notching his second score of the game tying it up at 2-2 with 4:27 showing before the first break.

Eastern Connecticut opened up the second quarter quickly with a goal just over a minute into the stanza (3-2).  The Mustangs struck immediately on another Conley goal knotting the score for the third time in the contest at 3-3.

From 12:38 in the second to 3:56 in the third quarter the Warriors showcased an offensive barrage with six unanswered goals to pull away 9-3.  The Mustangs finally answered back on a senior Alex Champagne (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) goal, his first score of the season, now trailing 9-4 late in the third.

Although the Mustangs fired in three goals in the final quarter, two by sophomore Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and one by sophomore Nate Prince (West Gardiner, ME/Gardiner Area), Mount Ida was outscored in the fourth quarter 5-3 dropping the 14-7 non-conference loss.

Junior backstop Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT/Amity Regional) saw the bulk of the minutes in net with a whopping 21 stops giving up all 14 goals.  Freshman goaltender Justin Famiglietti (Peabody, MA/Peabody) caught the final two minutes of the contest between the pipes.

The Mustangs will host their home opener this coming Saturday in their first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game against visiting Johnson State College starting at 1:00 p.m.
