CONLEY BREAKS GOALS RECORD EN ROUTE TO VICTORY

With 11:46 remaining in the game, senior captain Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) fired in the 145th goal of his career to break the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse record for goals scored in a career en route to a 20-3 bludgeoning against visiting North Atlantic Conference (NAC) foe Johnson State College this Saturday in their home opener.  The Mustangs improve to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in the NAC and extend their perfect winning streak in conference play to 38-0 under the direction of seventh year Head Coach Andrew Fink.  The Badgers fall in their season opener dropping to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.

Mount Ida scored the opening five goals in the first quarter with no answer from the visitors.  Senior Christopher Prophete (Waltham, MA/Waltham), sophomore's Nate Prince (West Gardiner, ME/Gardiner), Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody), and freshman Derek O'Reilly (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) started the offensive attack each scoring one a piece including two from Prince.  The Mustangs led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Badgers finally tallied a score in the first minute and a half of the second quarter from the stick of junior Steve Noyes (Barre, VT/Spaulding) making it 5-1.  Noyes eventually scored two of the Badgers three goals in the contest.

The visitors notched their second goal on a dish from freshman Justin Nelson (Lakeville, MA/Bishop Connolly) to junior Eric Tillberg (Randolph, CT/Randolph Union) trailing 7-2.  The Mustangs could not be stopped offensively scoring the next five out of six goals from O'Reilly, senior Anthony DiMaio (Agawam, MA/Agawam), Prophete, and two from Savage pulling away up 10-2.

Quarter number three was much of the same while the Mustangs fired in seven consecutive scores with no counter from Johnson State.  Sophomore Dan Harrington (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) notched goal 11 on a man-up advantage leading 11-2.  Senior Anthony DiMarsico (Fairport, NY/Fairport) tallied his first score of the year on a feed from Conley making it 12-2 hosts.

It continued for Mount Ida, showcasing their impressive offensive attack with goals from Savage, Prophete, Conley, sophomore Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan), and freshman Brendan Hylan (Clinton, CT/Morgan) stretching the lead to 17-2.  Johnson State eventually added their third and final goal of the contest by Noyes making it 17-3 in the beginning of the fourth quarter.

With 11:46 to go in the game, Conley took a feed in front of the net from freshman Ian Saunders (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) firing it in the net to overtake first place in the record books for goals in a career (145) and making it 18-3.

The Mustangs added two more goals to round out the game from O'Reilly and junior John Perez (Dorcester, MA/Wayland) to cap off their first NAC victory of the season, 20-3.

Mount Ida saw outstanding individual performances all around with Savage leading the pack with four goals.  O'Reilly and Prophete each added three goals a piece with Prophete also tallying two assists.  Prince and Conley followed with two a piece while Conley assisted five goals.  DiMarsico, Perez, Harrington, Battipaglia, Hylan, and DiMaio all chipped in one goal for the game.

The Mustangs will travel to nationally ranked number 16 Tufts University this coming Monday to face the Jumbos starting at 3:30 p.m.
