MEN'S LAX HAMMERS MONKS 28-10 FOR SEVENTH NAC WIN

The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team finished up their final regular season road trip this past Sunday at the newest member of the North Atlantic Conference (GNAC) in St. Joseph's College (ME) winning handily 28-10.  The Mustangs improve to 9-6 overall, 7-1 in conference competition while the Monks fall to 3-12, 1-7 in the NAC.

It was all Mount Ida right out of the gate firing in four goals to kick off the first quarter, two from senior Leo Shidler (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and one a piece from senior's Christopher Prophete (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and Anthony DiMarsico (Fairport, NY/Fairport), making it 4-0 early on.

After the Monks notched their first score of the game, the Mustangs powered six more consecutive goals, three more in the first quarter, before there was an answer from the hosts.  Shidler, Prophete, senior Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde), and junior Michael Simone (Dover, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas) all added one goal each during the six goal attack.  Sophomore Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) added two of his own as well making it 10-1 midway through the second quarter.

St. Joe's capitalized on their second goal of the contest at the 6:50 mark in the second stanza.  The Mustangs followed with four more consecutive scores, one a piece from Prophete, sophomore's Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan) and Nate Prince (West Gardiner, ME/Gardiner Area), and freshman Derek O'Reilly (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), pulling away at 14-2.

The Monks tallied one more score before the end of the first half notching their third goal of the game trailing 14-3.  The Mustangs started the third quarter with a five score barrage pulling away 19-3 on goals from Prophete, DiMarsico, and freshman Billy Gerke (Essex, VT/Rice Memorial) who all added one a piece during the streak with Savage tallying two more scores as well.

A mini run for the visitors scoring four consecutive goals midway through the third quarter pulled the Monks a little closer only down 19-7.  Savage and junior Jonathan Perez (Dorchester, MA/Wayland) answered immediately with two straight goals up 21-7. Another Monks goal to make it 21-8 was followed by two more Mount Ida scores by Gerke and Prince adding to their total leading 23-8.

Mount Ida out scored the hosts in the final stretch of the fourth quarter 5-2 seeing Mustang scores from senior Alex Champagne (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich), freshman Sean Slattery (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington), junior Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT/Amity Regional) all adding one a piece.  Freshman Ian Saunders (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) added two at the end of the game.  The Mustangs headed home with their seventh NAC victory of the season winning 28-10.

Every Mount Ida goaltender got a turn in net with Head Coach Fink splitting up the quarters evenly.  Freshman Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) saw the first quarter with one save.  Vernik was inserted between the pipes in quarter two stopping two shots.  Freshmen Justin Famiglietti (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and Craig Naftal (Bellmore, NY/JFK) divvied up the final two quarters with one save a piece.

The Mustangs will host this final regular season home game this coming Wednesday against NAC member Emerson College starting at 3:00 p.m.
