MATT SAVAGE HAS BIG DAY IN 26-4 NAC WIN

The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team tallied their seventh consecutive victory and their eighth North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win this Wednesday against visiting Emerson College by a score of 26-4 in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs improve to 10-6 overall, 7-1 in NAC competition while the Lions fall to 8-5, 5-4 in conference play.

The Mustangs opened the first quarter with an 11-0 bludgeoning with four goals from sophomore Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody), three from senior's Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) and Leo Shidler (Peabody, MA/Peabody), and one from freshman Billy Gerke (Essex, VT/Rice Memorial)

The visitors finally answered towards the end of the first stanza on an unassisted score by Lion junior Roger Tower (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Val.).  That wrapped up the first quarter with the Mustangs leading 11-1.

Mount Ida continued to pour on the offense notching four consecutive goals to start the second quarter.  Savage tallied two more during the mini streak while senior Christopher Prophete (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and sophomore Nate Prince (West Gardiner, ME/Gardiner Area) added one a piece.  The Mustangs led 15-1 after the small run to open the set.  Another Tower goal for the visitors made it 15-2 in favor of the Mustangs to end the first half.

The third quarter started with another huge offensive barrage by Mount Ida tallying six consecutive goals making it 21-2 with no answer from Emerson.  Conley, Savage, senior Anthony DiMarsico (Fairport, NY/Fairport), and junior's Frank Rozio (Clinton, CT/Morgan), Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT/Amity Regional), and Michael Simone (Dover, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas) all notched one goal a piece during the six score stretch.

Two Lions goals, both my sophomore Phil Shore (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East), cut the score to 21-4 in favor of the Mustangs.  Mount Ida rounded out the fourth quarter with five goals from Vernik, senior Alex Champagne (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich), sophomore Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan), and two from freshman Ian Saunders (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) to cap the 26-4 victory for the hosts.

Savage had the big day for Mount Ida with seven goals while fellow teammate Conley also enjoyed a very successful day spreading things around with seven assists and four scores.  Three goaltenders split the minutes for the Mustangs with freshman Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) getting the first half with one save.  Freshmen Justin Famiglietti (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and Craig Naftal (Bellmore, NY/JFK) shared the rest of the minutes with Famiglietti blocking four Lion shots and Naftal denying two.

The Mustangs will head into the weekend hosting the NAC quarterfinal round this coming Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.  The opponent has yet to be determined.
