MUSTANG LAX CAPTURES SIXTH CONSECUTIVE NAC TITLE

Senior captain Leo Shidler (Peabody, MA/Peabody) led the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team to their sixth consecutive North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship with a record breaking nine goals and one assist en route to a 25-9 romping over hosting NAC rival Castleton State College this Saturday afternoon in Castleton, Vermont. Shidler was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament including an all-tournament team selection. Mount Ida, who lost their first ever conference game in 39 tries through six years to the Spartans earlier in the season, will head into the NCAA tournament for the third year in a row. The Mustangs improve to 13-6 overall and end their 2009 conference schedule at 9-1.
The Spartans went ahead quickly in the opening quarter scoring two goals leading 2-0 in the first 2:30 of the game. Shidler quickly erased the deficit with four consecutive goals to regain the advantage and lead 4-2. The Shidler scores were dished out by senior's Christopher Prophete (Waltham, MA/Waltham), Anthony DiMarsico (Fairport, NY/Fairport), and sophomore Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan) including one unassisted score.
The Mustang offensive barrage would continue with two more goals by Prophete, on a man-up score, and senior Anthony DiMaio (Agawam, MA/Agawam) adding to their lead up 6-2 in the beginning of the second quarter. The Spartans answered with another at the six minute mark in the second to cut the advantage to 6-3.
Shidler halted any thought of a quick comeback by the hosts firing in three more scores midway through the second stanza pulling ahead 9-3 on feeds from senior's Prophete, Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde), and sophomore Dan Harrington (Westford, MA/Westford Academy).
After an unassisted score by Castleton making it 9-4, Mount Ida added two more to the board on goals by Harrington and Battapaglia heading into halftime with an 11-4 advantage.
The third quarter was owned by the Mustangs powering a 7-0 run with scores, two more scores by Shidler, and one a piece from Prophete, Conley, DiMaio, senior Alex Champagne (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich), and sophomore Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) blowing open the game leading 18-4.
The visitors eventually added two more to their total towards the end of the third quarter making it 18-6. A score by Mount Ida's Savage with 11 seconds remaining in the third gave the Mustangs the 19-6 advantage going into the final frame.
Quarter four started with three consecutive scores by Mount Ida from Prophete, Harrington, and Savage, two which were unassisted, and the final coming from a dish by DiMarsico leading 22-6.
Three quick scores within two minutes of each other pulled the Spartans total to nine goals down 22-9 with less than four minutes to go in the game. The final three goals of the game were all by Mount Ida from Savage, DiMarsico, and freshman Ian Saunders (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) handing the Mustangs the 25-9 victory and their sixth consecutive NAC championship.
The second go around this season between these two teams was a completely different story on both sides. Game one was close but the outcome went to the Spartans but this time around the championship was all about Mount Ida. The Mustangs outdid the Spartans in the major statistical categories beating them out in shots (48-33), groundballs (46-41) and Mount Ida forcing 34 Castleton turnovers.
All nine shots that Shidler took found the back of the net for an amazing 100 percent shooting. Mount Ida's Savage, who tallied four goals and two assists today, broke the program record for goals in a season with 56 surpassing the old record of 53 held by alumnus P.J. Matthews that was set in 2003. He also is the newest member of the 100 point club with 40 point's in 2008 and 64 in 2009 for 104 in his career.
Along side the Peabody, Massachusetts tandem of Savage and Shidler, was Prophete with three goals and two assists. Harrington and DiMaio added two a piece and one each from Conley, DiMarsico, Champagne, Saunders, and Battapaglia. Mount Ida freshman backstop Justin Famiglietti (Peabody, MA/Peabody) saw all 60 minutes in net with 11 huge saves for the Mustangs.
The NAC all-tournament team saw five players in Mount Ida uniforms with Shidler taking the MVP honors. Conley, Prophete, Famiglietti, and sophomore defenseman Bryan Seaman (Peabody, MA/Peabody) were the other four players to round out the hardware for all-tournament team selections.
Mount Ida men's lacrosse will head to their third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance with the selection show kicking off tonight to see who they'll face in the first round.
