MEN'S LAX FALLS TO BEAVERS IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
Visiting Babson College scored the first seven goals of the game giving the hosting Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse program a large deficit to overcome early on in the contest falling 10-5 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs fall to 6-4 overall and remain at 4-0 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while the Beavers improve to 6-5.
The visitors started the game on a 7-0 run through the first half with no answer offensively from the hosts on two goals from junior Andrew Packer (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve Academy) and one a piece from senior Max Artz (Gates Mills, OH/Hawken School), sophomore’s Scott Schachter (Rumford, RI/Kimball Union Academy) and T.J. Mallon (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset), and freshmen Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, VT/Kimball Union Academy) and Alex Patinkin (Providence, RI/Providence Country Day) for a commanding advantage.
Packer’s second goal during the seven score stretch started the third quarter but was immediately answered by the Mustangs on two freshman Nick Yacuzzi (Oakham, MA/St. John’s) goals, one unassisted and the other on a dish from junior Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan) trailing 7-2.
Babson did not let up scoring two consecutively on unassisted goals from sophomore Cam Caruso (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East) and senior Jon Standen (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) inflating their advantage up 9-2 at the 6:16 mark in the third frame.
Mount Ida never backed down scoring two more goals, the first from junior Dan Harrington (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) on a feed from senior Chris Prophete (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and the second coming on Yacuzzi’s third goal of the day this time from sophomore Zach Jacobson (Shoreview, MN/Moundsview) still behind 9-4 in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
The squads exchanged goals to end the contest with Babson striking first on another Artz goal from Caruso. Junior Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) scored the final tally of the game on a dish from sophomore Derek O’Reilly (East Setuaket, NY/Ward Melville) giving the Beavers a 10-5 non-conference victory.
Mount Ida dominated most of the statistical categories leading in shots (40), ground balls (50), and faceoff wins with 13 out of 18. The Mustangs struggled to put the ball in the net which ultimately led to their demise.
Sophomore netminder Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) was brilliant denying 15 Beaver shots while Babson goaltender senior Mike Saucier (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) made 17 saves.
The Mustangs will travel to Vermont this coming Saturday to play NAC member Johnson State College starting at 1:00 p.m.
