2010 SPRING ALL-CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED

SOFTBALL

Mount Ida College softball sophomore shortstop Erica Belliveau (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury) took top honors for her team selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) second team all-conference as a utility player.  Belliveau, who made the switch from catcher to shortstop this season, led the Mustangs in slugging percentage with an impressive .586 average and belted a team high five round trippers for the season, two more than her freshman year (3).  Bealliveau tallied 38 hits, three doubles, six triples, seven walks, adding an on-base percentage of .368 and led the Mustangs in RBI’s with 36.  Erica was also selected to the GNAC honor roll once this season back on April 19, 2010.  Belliveau’s best outing of 2010 came in the Mustangs first home doubleheader of the year against Simmons College when she hammered a grand slam driving in four runs.


Mount Ida College softball freshman hurler Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) was one of three newcomers this season to be selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) third team all-conference in her case specifically the pitchers position.  Meeker was the ace of the Mustangs staff throwing 166.1 innings in 31 appearances on the mound only surrendering six homeruns and 21 walks for the entire year with an earned run average of 2.53.  Meeker was ranked 20th in all of NCAA Division III for walks per seven innings averaging 0.88 base on balls per game.  She was selected to the GNAC honor roll once back on April 5, 2010.  In 25 starts this season, Meeker threw 23 complete games along with four shutouts for the year.  Meeker was also awarded the team’s Most Valuable Player at the 21stAnnual Mount Ida College Athletic Banquet.

Mount Ida College softball freshman third baseman Danielle Mitchell (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson) was another newcomer to be selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) third team all-conference.  Mitchell played every inning in all 36 games played in 2010 and led the Mustangs in doubles (12) for the year.  Mitchell showcased a lot of power throughout the season hammering three homeruns good for second on the team behind Belliveau.  Mitchell landed third for the squad in batting average (.339) and had a slugging percentage of .539.  She was selected to the GNAC honor roll once this season back on April 5, 2010 and was honored with the GNAC Sportsmanship Award at the end of the year.

Mount Ida College softball freshman second baseman Tiffany Hamann (Newton, MA/Newton North) was the final newcomer to be selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) third team all-conference squad.  Hamann broke the school record for hits in a season with 47 with a batting average of .379 and led the team in runs scored with 38.   Hamann, who saw every inning in 36 games played, was the spark Mount Ida softball needed throughout the year on the base paths swiping 18 bases in 20 attempts with an on-base percentage of .395.  She was selected to the GNAC honor roll once this season back on April 19, 2010.  Hamann was featured in the Boston Globe South sports section in the “Here and There” section written by Globe Correspondent Marvin Pave. 

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Mount Ida College men’s volleyball junior middle blocker Thomas Belton (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) was one of two Mustangs to be honored with Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) all-conference honors making the second team.  Belton was a powerful force at the net the entire year for the Mustangs as part of a team that broke the program record for victories (11) in a season under the direction of fifth year head coach Doug Porrell.  Belton led the Mustangs with 295 total kills for the year tallying 3.83 kills per game.  Belton was solid on the defensive side of the net as well landing second on the squad with 147 digs good for 1.91 digs a game.  He also ranked third on the team in total blocks with 44.  Belton was named Player-of-the-Week for the GNAC on February 1, 2010 and was named Most Valuable Player at the 21st Annual Mount Ida College Athletic Banquet for the program. 

Mount Ida College men’s volleyball freshman outside hitter Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creak) enjoyed a stellar first year with the Mustangs selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) third team all-conference.  Hastings, who was also awarded the GNAC Sportsmanship Award, was second overall in kills (209) with a hitting percentage of .178 and was tied for first in aces (28) for his team.  He notched 108 digs for the season and was second on the team in total blocks with 50. 

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Three Mount Ida College women’s lacrosse players made the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) first team all-conference in their inaugural season as a varsity program. 

Mount Ida College junior attacker Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) was a goal scoring machine all season for the Mustangs and second year head coach Peri Steere tallying an impressive 82 goals and five assists in 14 games played.  Thompson, who led all of NCAA Division III for most of the season in goals, ended up in fourth in goals per game (5.86) for the year and fourth in total goals (82).  Thompson also landed 25th in Division III in points with 87 and was 9th in points per game with 6.21.   Thompson received GNAC Player-of-the-Week honors once and was named to the GNAC honor roll twice on April 12 and 19. 

Mount Ida College junior attacker Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) was an integral part to the Mustangs success this season as the “go-to” player who brought a plethora of talent and intensity to her team.  Chuba was second on the team on goals with 60 notching 13 assists for an impressive 73 points.  She landed in 29th place in all of NCAA Division III in points per game (5.21) and 16th in goals per game (4.29). 

Mount Ida College junior midfielder Beck Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union), a first year player who picked up the sport just this season, was awarded with Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) first team all-conference honors turning in an impressive year with her speed and athletic ability making it an easier to pick up the sport.  Tisbert led the Mustangs all season in groundballs (58) and was ranked for most of the year for NCAA Division III.  She notched 13 goals and five assists good for 18 points for the season good for third on the team. 

MEN’S LACROSSE

Mount Ida College junior attacker Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) was one of five Mustang men’s lacrosse players to notch North Atlantic Conference (NAC) all-conference honors selected to the first team for the second season in a row and his third year making an all-conference team.  Savage continued his reign as the leading goal scorer for the Mustangs with 44 on the season with nine assists good for 53 points.  His best game came against NAC member Thomas College in a 22-2 romping where he notched six goals and one assist.

Mount Ida College senior captain Matthew Vernik (Bethany, CT/Amity Regional) was one of two Mustang seniors to make first team all-conference for the North Atlantic Conference (NAC).  Vernik, who was the top goaltender for the program for his first two years, made the move to the face-off specialist position towards the end of last season that spilled over into his senior year.  From a truly unselfish and team first type of player, Vernik dominated the middle circle for most of the year going 212-334 good for a .635 percentage.  He tallied five goals, three assists good for eight points this season.  Vernik was a groundball machine picking up 147 all year ranking ninth in all NCAA Division III for groundballs per game with 8.17. He was also ranked 10th in the country for DIII in face-off winning percentage (.635).  Vernik was named Co-Player-of-the-Week for the NAC on May 3, 2010.

Mount Ida College senior defenseman Kevin Mulvey (Peabody, MA/Peabody) was the other senior to gain North Atlantic Conference (NAC) first team all-conference honors for his first ever selection in four years with the Mustangs.  Mulvey was also named by eighth year head coach Andrew Fink the team’s Most Valuable Player at the 21st Annual Mount Ida College Athletic Banquet.  Although his team lost in the NAC championship for the first time in seven years, Mulvey was named to the 2010 NAC all-tournament team for his outstanding play through the post-season.  Mulvey was the lead man in the number one man down defense in all of NCAA Division III with a percentage of .907.  Kevin was second on the team in groundballs (57) and number one in caused turnovers (33).  He scored one goal with one assist. 

Mount Ida College sophomore goaltender Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) was the final Mustang to be selected to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) first team all-conference.  McAllister, who transferred from Springfield College last year, saw the bulk of the action between the pipes tallying 184 total saves in 16 games play and 798:40 minutes in net.  McAllister’s .632 save percentage was good for ninth place in all of NCAA Division III and ranked 39th in goals against average.  Jimmy was named to the 2010 NACC all-tournament team for his outstanding performance throughout the post-season.  This was the first time McAllister has taken home any individual hardware for his performance during the year.  Jimmy was named NAC Player-of-the-Week on April 5, 2010.

Mount Ida College sophomore long stick midfielder Carl Grimo (Bristol, RI/LaSalle Academy) was the only Mustang to make the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) second team all-conference for his first all-conference recognition with the men’s lacrosse program after transferring from Springfield College last year.  Grimo was a tenacious defender as part of the devastating defense all season as a major contributor in the number one man down defense in all of NCAA Division III with a percentage of .907.  Grimo was second on the team in caused turnovers (27) and scooped up 31 groundballs for the season.  He will be a huge part of the defensive scheme next year as a seasoned veteran junior under the direction of ninth year head coach Andrew Fink.
