Tuesday, April 12, 2011 (Newton, Massachusetts) – Behind a game high four points by senior captain Dan Harrington (Westford, MA/Westford Academy), the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team snatched their third consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory and their fourth of 2011 with a 9-7 win over visiting Norwich University Tuesday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs, who sit atop the GNAC standings tied with neighboring rival Lasell College, improve to an overall record of 5-7 and are perfect (4-0) in league play.

Mount Ida freshman standout Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, RI/St. Andrew's School) notched the first goal of the game right off the face-off on a feed from sophomore Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury) up 1-0.  Mount Ida added another less than 20 seconds later on Yacuzzi's first of two scores during the contest on a feed from sophomore Jake Davis (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy) to lead 2-0 in the opening minute.

The visitors countered four minutes later with two straight goals, both coming from unassisted bids by sophomore Joe Galante (Framingham, MA/Framingham) tying the score at 2-2.

Yacuzzi, Harrington and senior Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan) reeled off the next three straight goals for Mount Ida, two unassisted and the other from junior Sean Slattery (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington), for the 5-2 advantage that finished at the start of the second quarter.

Following another Galante score for Norwich this time on a dish from sophomore Arron Canarelli (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), the Mustangs answered with two more scores to close out the second stanza.  Rosen and Harrington added the tallies with Rosen's goal coming from a Harrington feed for the 7-3 lead heading into halftime.

The only goal notched in a very quite third quarter was by the Mustangs on Harrington's third and final score of the game on an unassisted bid to lead by five scores (8-3).

Seven and a half minutes into the final frame Slattery found the back of the net for his only goal of the contest on a feed from junior Brendan Hylan (Clinton, CT/Morgan) taking a game high 9-3 advantage.

It looked as if the Mustangs would close out the GNAC win but the visitors made it interesting down the final stretch notching the last four goals of the game starting with Galante's fourth and final bid of the game from freshman Ian Thomas (Barrington, RI/Barrington) trailing 9-4.

Two unassisted goals by Norwich freshman Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, MD/Urbana) ensued with the final minutes ticking away with the Cadets down 9-6.  Dustin found the back of the net for the visitors with just over a minute to go on an unassisted score down by only two goals (9-7) at this point for the first time since the first quarter.

Unfortunately for the Cadets, that's as close as they would get with Mount Ida closing out their fourth GNAC win of 2011 notching the 9-7 victory.

Mount Ida dominated the groundball game scooping up 55 of 41, seven of which came from junior Carl Grimo (Bristol, RI/LaSalle Academy) and another eight from sophomore Nick Maurais (Peabody, MA/Peabody).  The visitor's maintained control of the middle circle winning 14 of 20 attempts with sophomore Nate Fortezzo (Branford, CT/Branford) converting 10 of 15 chances.

Mount Ida netminder Chandler Webb (Quincy, MA/Bishop Hendricken (RI)) denied eight shots while Cadet goaltender freshman Mark Paradiso (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) caromed nine saves.

The Mustangs will travel to GNAC opponent Rivier College this coming Saturday in Nashua, New Hampshire with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
