MEN'S LAX FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS WITH 11-3 SEMIFINAL WIN
Friday, April 27, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - On Friday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) semifinal action, Mount Ida College men's lacrosse junior attacker Gilson Fernandes (Saugus, MA/Saugus) recorded two goals and two assists en route to an 11-3 victory over visiting number three seed Anna Maria College on a blustery day in Newton, Massachusetts. The number two seeded Mustangs will host fourth seed Norwich University this coming Saturday with game time slated for 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Mount Ida Athletic Stadium. The Cadets stunned number one seeded Lasell College in a tight 5-4 win today giving the Mustangs hosting duties for the title match.
The hosts held a shutout up until the 9:41 mark in the final quarter when the visitors added their first goal of the contest stymieing the AmCats with tenacious defense and outstanding goaltending play from senior netminder Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy).
Mount Ida's offense was firing on all cylinders scoring the first nine goals of the game through three quarters of play eventually solidifying the post-season victory.
Ninth year Head Coach Andrew Fink and his squad improve to an overall record of 14-4 and are one win away from besting the program record for victories in a season set back in 2006 going 10-1 in conference play. This is the ninth straight conference title game the Mustangs have competed in. The visitors end 2012 after a solid year at 11-7 with a league slate of 7-4.
Along with a solid performance from Fernandes, Mount Ida saw two goals each from senior's Zach Jacobson (Shoreview, MN/Moundsview) and Brendan Hylan (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School). Freshman attacker Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers) continues to play well adding a score and three dishes. Senior's Sean Slattery (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington) and Ian Saunders (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls), junior Jake Davis (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy) and freshman Chaz Strom (North Grafton, MA/Blackstone Valley) tallied one goal a piece.
For the visitors, senior Brad Peterson (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) notched a team-high two goals while freshman midfielder Joshua Smith (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional) added one score. Senior attacker Mike Saulnier (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip) recorded an assist on a Peterson man-up goal.
The Mustangs out dueled the AmCats in the middle circle with sophomore face-off specialist Kyle Danehy (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough) going 7-11 with six ground balls. Junior defenseman Nick Maurias (Peabody, MA/Peabody) was solid chipping in two caused turnovers and six pick-ups.
McAllister saw all 60 minutes between the pipes for the Mustangs recording 10 saves adding a game-high eight ground balls while AmCat goaltender, senior Andrew Ellis (Fitchburg, MA/St. Bernard's), made 14 stops.
