MEN'S LAX DROPS SECOND STRAIGHT, FALL 15-5 TO PILGRIMS

Wednesday, March 6, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts) - For the entirety of first quarter action, the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team fell behind 5-1 and was unable to answer surrendering a 15-5 non-conference loss to visiting New England College Wednesday afternoon through a montage of New England wintery weather on Alumni Field.  The Mustangs, who snatched a 5-4 victory over the Pilgrims just a year prior, struggled to keep pace with a surging visitor offense that saw a game-high four goals with one helper from senior attacker Jason Putney (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes).  Mount Ida had trouble holding onto the ball coughing up 27 turnovers going 12-20 clearing the ball out of the defensive zone.

The hosts drop their second non-league loss in a row falling to an overall record of 1-2 while NEC captures their first victory of the year improving to 1-1 after a 2013 opening loss to Babson College (18-7).  Neither squad has yet to compete in a conference match-up.

For the third straight game, Mount Ida freshman attacker and this week's GNAC Player-of-the-Week Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) led the hosts with three scores on the day.  Senior midfielder Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury) added one goal and a dish while sophomore attacker Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers) distributed three assists.  Senior attacker Cody Collard (North Haven, CT/North Haven) notched his first score of the season in the second quarter respectively.

Along with a standout performance from Putney, Pilgrim senior's Matt Goyette (Lowell, MA/Lowell) and Brian Gillis (North Vancouver, BC/Windsor Secondary) and freshman midfielder Chris Surette (Lynn, MA/Proctor Academy) all notched two goals each.  Gillis would also hand out three assists for the contest as well.

To open the first quarter, the squads exchanged scores with the visitors striking first on junior Pat Miles (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) only tally of the game.  Mount Ida struck less than minute later on Pichel's first of three on a feed from Yacuzzi stymieing the game at 1-1 at the 13:10 mark.

NEC went on to score the next four goals to overtake a commanding 5-1 advantage capped on successful attempt from Pilgrim freshman attacker Tim Reilly (Hanover, MA/Hanover) set up by Gillis to close out the opening stanza.

The action was stale offensively through the half of the second quarter with the Mustangs adding a man-up goal at the six minute mark on a Collard score off a dish from Trocchi to trail 5-2.  With time expiring, Gillis put some insurance on the board notching an unassisted bid heading into halftime with the visitors leading 6-2.

New England College opened third quarter action with four scores, two each from Putney and Goyette, to command a 10-2 lead heading into the final frame.

Pichel and Trocchi hooked up twice to start the last stanza trailing 11-4 with 10 minutes remaining.  The visitors would not let up scoring four of the final five goals of the game to ultimately hand the Mustangs a 15-5 loss.

Mount Ida junior net minder Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, MA/Hebron Academy) saw three quarters of action denying 11 Pilgrim attempts while junior goaltender Craig Bray (New Canann, CT/Vermont Academy) got his first minutes of the year in the last quarter notching three stops.  Sophomore goalie Chris Galluzzo (New London, NH/Wells College) was solid in net for NEC adding nine saves through all 60 ticks.

The Mustangs will host their third straight home game since the start of the 2013 season facing non-league UMASS-Dartmouth this Saturday with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.  NEC has the weekend off and will travel to Colby College Tuesday evening with opening face-off coming at 4:00 p.m.
