Wednesday, March 13, 2013 (Salem, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team surrendered the game winning goal in sudden death overtime 1:44 into the extra frame falling 14-13 to host Salem State University Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Massachusetts.  The Vikings trailed by two goals with three and a half minutes to go in regulation eventually tying the game throwing action into overtime.  Salem State sophomore midfielder Matt Whited (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) added the winning tally for the Vikings.

The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 1-4 dropping their fourth straight loss of the 2013 season and will travel to Rivier University Saturday to compete in their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up starting at 1:00 p.m.

The Vikings carried a 6-4 lead into the halftime period after Salem State's Ben Melaugh (Billerica, MA) and Frank Lento (Salem, MA) notched the first two scores of the game.  Mount Ida tied the game with goals by Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers) and Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury), but A.J. Robertson (Ipswich, MA) and Melaugh scored back-to–back goals for the Vikings thirty seconds apart to regain the lead for Salem State late in the first period. Zachary Rosen (East Greenwich, RI/St. Andrew's School) added a goal for the Mustangs, who trailed by one, going into the 2nd period.

Robertson's shot from the left side and Kyle Dolan's (North Andover, MA) blast built the lead to 6-3 before Yacuzzi drew the Mustangs to within a goal before halftime.

Yacuzzi scored his third and fourth goals for Mount Ida, and Salem State's Dolan countered to make it 7-6 as both teams went back and forth in the third.  Mount Ida's Trocchi tied the game at the 9:24 mark, but Salem State's Melaugh put his team back on top with a spectacular goal.  Rosen tied it back up for Mount Ida, and Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) put his team back on top with a pair of goals at 10-8 to end the third.

Neither team was able to build a lead larger than two goals as Frank Lento (Salem, MA) struck first for the Vikings in the final period, and Nate Staples (Salem, MA) tied the score 10-10 game with a goal.  However, Cordaro and Zach Davis (Old Lyme, CT/Xavier) quickly countered with two goals for the Mustangs, before the Vikings' Ian Abrahamson (Billerica, MA) tightened the lead with a goal.  Davis added another goal to give the Mustangs a 13-11 lead with 3:29 left, but Robertson kept the Vikings close with a score, and Melaugh tied it up with 1:47 remaining to set up Whited's heroics in overtime.

Vikings freshman keeper Dylan Svenson (Billerica, MA) made eight saves to pick up the win, while the Mustangs' Craig Bray (New Canaan, CT/Vermont Academy) made five saves in relief of starter Cordaro, who left early in the first.

Melaugh scored four goals and added an assist for the Vikings while Robertson finished with three goals and a helper, and Lento and Dolan scored two goals and an assist apiece. Yacuzzi led Mount Ida with four goals while Rosen, Trocchi, Davis, and Pichel added two scores.
