MEN'S LAX FALLS AT NON-CONFERENCE KEAN, 21-7

March 30th, 2013 (Union, New Jersey)- The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-7 non-conference set back at hosting Kean University this past Saturday afternoon.  With the loss, the Mustangs stand at (3-6, 2-0 GNAC) while the Cougars improve (8-1, 0-0 SKYLINE). 

Mount Ida was led offensively by senior Nick Yacuzzi (Oakham, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury) who tallied a game high three goals for the visitors on eight shots.  Sophomore attack Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers) scored two of his own on three shots attempted in the game while junior Zach Davis (Old Lyme, CT/Xavier) and senior Cody Collard (North Haven, CT/North Haven) each added an unassisted goal each.

The Cougars saw four hat tricks scored on the day, two by seniors Sean Bobal (Clinton, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Brad Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) and two more by juniors Richard Cheifitz (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and John Marcelli (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown). 

Cheifitz scored the first goal of the game at the 14:15 mark giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead.  The Mustangs would answer back two minutes later on a goal by Trocchi at 13:11.  Yacuzzi would tally his first tally of the game four minutes later, giving Mount Ida the 2-1 lead while Collard scored with just over three minutes in the half improving the visitors lead to 3-1. 

Kean was not done scoring in the first quarter as Mills and Marcelli would score in the final 3:30 minutes to knot the score at 3-3 after one quarter of play.

To start the second quarter, Cheifitz would score two straight goals to increase the Kean lead to 5-3.  Trocchi inched the Mustangs closer with his final goal of the day at the 8:42 mark before Kean senior Tom Clifford (West Islip, NY/West Islip) scored two straight goals to bolster the hosts lead to 7-4.  Senior Ryan Buerkle (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), Mills, and Anthony Perrotta (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) would finish the half scoring three goals in the final 2:08, and taking a commanding 10-4 lead into halftime.

Kean dominated the third quarter by scoring seven goals and holding the Mustangs scoreless.  Bobal scored three goals while Marcelli, Mills, Perrotta and junior Mike Sheehan (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph) all added to the lead, making it 17-4 after three quarters of play.

The Mustangs would add three scores in the fourth quarter, but it would prove not enough as Kean would manage four more goals and the Cougars would come away the victory, 21-7.

Craig Bray (New Canaan, CT/Vermont Academy) played the first 55:04 of the contest making thirteen saves on thirty four shots while junior Anthony Genualdo (Peabody, MA/Mystic Valley) played the final 4:56 for the Mustangs.  Dino Vitale (Ambler, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) would see the first 41:05 in net for Kean while Lane Zierten (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Twp.), Garret VanDoren (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Max Fields would finish the game.

The Mustangs will get back to work on Tuesday, April 2nd hosting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Emerson College with game time slated for 3:30.  Kean will begin Skyline Conference play on Wednesday, hosting Richard Stockton College at 7 p.m.
