Tuesday, April 2, 2013 (Newton, Massachusetts)- The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team captured their third straight conference victory of the 2013 season by knocking off the visiting Lions of Emerson College by a final score of 20-8. With the win, the Mustangs improve to (4-6, 3-0 GNAC) while Emerson drops to (2-5, 1-4 GNAC).
Emerson junior midfielder Brandon Lavoie would score the first goal of the game at the 10:22 mark giving the Lions an early 1-0 advantage. Three minutes later, Chaz Strom (North Grafton, MA/Blackstone Valley) tied the game for the Mustangs at 1-1 with his first goal of the game. Lavoie would strike again two minutes later while regaining the lead for the visitors. Mustangs junior attack Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, RI/St. Andrew's School) tallied his first score of the game at the 4:47 mark of the first quarter tying the game yet again for the home team while senior midfielder Jake Davis (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy) notched his first score of the game giving the Mustangs a 3-2 lead after the first quarter of play.
Cody Collard (North Haven, CT/North Haven) scored at the 14:35 mark on an assist from Davis that would increase the Mustang lead to 4-2. Emerson would respond with two straight goals from Max Smith (Gillette, NJ/Watchung Heights Regional) and Eric Colleran (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) tying the score at 4-4. In the last 7:44 of the half, the Mustangs would score three goals from Erik Berman (Montclair, NJ/Montclair), Strom, and Zach Davis (Old Lyme, CT/Xavier), giving the Mustangs a 7-4 lead.
The hosts came out firing in the second half scoring the first six goals of the half. Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) started the scoring at the 14:57 mark, while Zach Davis, JT Hoyt (Westfield, MA/Westfield), Berman, Jake Davis, and Ryan Tirelli (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) would all score and give the Mustangs a commanding 13-4 lead. Ben Byrd (Richardson, TX) would tally his first score of the game for the Lions, but the Mustangs would retaliate with two quick scores by Paul Studdard (West Haven, CT/West Haven) and Rosen.
Pichel would pick up where he left off in the third quarter scoring his second goal of the game at the 10:13 mark in the fourth. Michael Markevich (Westminster, MA/Oakmont) would go on a tear of his own recording two goals in less than thirty seconds only to score another goal just five minutes later to complete the hat trick. Nicholas Kitsos (Summitt, NJ) would record a trio of goals himself before Markevich would tally his fourth score of the game and solidify the GNAC victory for the Mustangs by a final score of 20-8.
Junior keeper Craig Bray (New Cannan, CT/Vermont Academy) would see the first half of action for the Mustangs making six saves on fourteen shots. Anthony Genualdo (Peabody, MA/Mystic Valley saw second half action for the hosts. Emerson goaltender Clayton Fisk saw the entire sixty minutes for the Lions making nineteen saves on thirty-nine shots.
The Mustangs will get back to work on Thursday, April 4th at home when they take on Daniel Webster College with game time slated for 3:30 PM. Emerson will hit the road on Saturday, April 6th to take on Emmanuel College at 3:00 PM.
