MUSTANGS POWER BY MONKS IN FINAL MINUTES, WIN 8-4
April 16, 2013 (Portland, Maine)- The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team defeated the Monks of Saint Joseph's College (ME) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 8-4. With the win, the Mustangs improve to (8-7, 7-1 GNAC) while the Monks drop to (7-8, 6-2 GNAC).
Mount Ida was led offensively by several different players on the afternoon most notably by senior midfielder Nick Yacuzzi (Oakham, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury) who tallied two goals and two assists in the victory. Also scoring two goals for the Mustangs was Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers) while also assisting on one score. J.T. Hoyt (Westfield, MA/Westfield), Chaz Strom (North Grafton, MA/Blackstone Valley Tech), Michael Markevich (Westminster, MA/Oakmont), and Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs all scoring one goal apiece. Senior defense Nick Maurais (Peabody, MA/Peabody) assisted on Trocchi's second marker of the game in the final 5:45 of the contest.
The Monks kept pace with the defending conference champions and held a 2-1 lead when sophomore Andrew Sullivan (Rochester, NH) scored off an Andrew Hamill (Wolfeboro, NH) feed with 12:25 remaining in the second quarter. The Mustangs struck with goals from Hoyt and Yacuzzi during a span of just over two minutes to claim a slim advantage, but Monks' freshman attackman Austin Watts (Westbrook, ME) netted his 12th goal of the season off a Dalton Eldridge (South Gardiner, ME) pass to knot the game at three apiece heading into the half.
The third quarter featured only two goals, as Yacuzzi beat St. Joe's senior keeper Christopher Driscoll (Saco, ME) with a shot 4:31 into the frame and Eldridge slipped a shot past Mount Ida junior net minder Craig Bray (New Canaan, CT/Vermont Academy) with 1:15 remaining in the period to make it a 4-4 game heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter featured the same back and forth defensive-minded play for the first five minutes, but Mount Ida dominated play during the closing 10 minutes and, after missing the mark with five shots during a two-minute span, broke the stalemate with a Markevich goal with 8:16 to play.
The goal energized the Mustangs as the visitors went on to net three more markers over the course of the next four minutes of play. Trocchi scored twice in a matter of 33 seconds and sophomore Strom tallied the game's final goal off a Yacuzzi dish to provide Mount Ida with an 8-4 cushion with 4:17 remaining.
With the Mustangs surging, the Monks were unable to get anything going as the Royal Blue went without a shot attempt for nearly nine minutes. Trailing by four, Saint Joseph's finally applied some offensive pressure late but failed to find the back of the net as Bray stopped a Watts shot and an Eldridge bid sailed wide.
Junior attack Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, RI/St. Andrews School) picked up six ground balls and senior Will Krach (Agawam, MA/Agawam) won nine of 15 face-off attempts in the victory. Bray recorded 11 saves in goal for the visitors on 15 shots.
Mount Ida will get back to work on Saturday, April 20th, for a 3:00 p.m. clash with cross town rival Lasell College. Saturday is Senior Day for the Mustangs and seniors Jake Davis (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy), Nick Yacuzzi, Brandon Brown (Monroe, CT/Masuk), Ryan Tirelli (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown), Cody Collard (North Haven, CT/North Haven), Nick Maurais, and Will Krach will all be honored before game time. Saint Joseph's will be back in action on Saturday as well when they host the Cadets of Norwich University in Portland, Maine at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
