NASHUA, N.H. -- Mount Ida College will be the hosts for next Thursday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse semifinals after the Mustangs defeated Rivier University 11-8 on Tuesday night to clinch the #2 seed in the postseason.
Mount Ida ran their win streak to six games and improved to 12-4 on the year and 6-1 in the conference. The win total is the second highest in the GNAC era, second only to the 15-win team of 2012.
This will be the second time in the last three years in which Mount Ida is the #2 seed. In 2015 they defeated Norwich 6-5 at Alumni Field in the semifinals before eventually falling to top-seed Emmanuel in the championship game.
Lasell College defeated the Saints today 19-12 to clinch the top seed with a 10-3 record and a 7-0 conference mark.
The Mustangs overcame a sluggish defensive start by holding the Raiders to just one goal in each of the final three periods. Rivier led 5-4 after one frame, but the Mustangs got five goals in the second, two each by Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.) and Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.).
Each player would go on to tally a hat trick, with Coehlo adding an assist for a four point day, matched by the two goals and two assists of Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.).
The visitors led 9-6 at the half, and that was enough, as goals were hard to come by, with each team scoring twice in the second half.
Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made 12 saves to improve to 12-4 himself in the goal.
Mount Ida's next time out will be their final regular season home game where they will honor 12 seniors on Saturday afternoon. Face-off against Saint Joseph's Maine is set for 1:00 pm, with senior day ceremonies to start shortly before that.
