2009 Season Review
The Mount Ida College men's soccer team compiled an overall record of 5-12, 4-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) making it to the GNAC post-season tournament for the third season in row. The Mustangs fell in the quarterfinal round of the tournament with a 6-0 loss to neighboring rival Lasell College on October 31st, 2009.
Mount Ida College freshman striker Will Daniels (Bethany, CT/Notre Dame) was named GNAC men's soccer Rookie-of-the-Year as well as a second team all-conference selection. Daniels tallied team high 10 goals along with one assist good for 21 total points on the season. He ranked first atop the conference statistics in shots (85) and shots per game (5.31) and was seventh in the conference for points (21). Daniels also was in a three way tie for fifth in goals for the GNAC with 10.
Mustang junior midfielder Hayato Kanesaka (Old Tappen, NJ/Northern Valley) received a first team all-conference selection, his second appearance on the first team and third year making an all-conference team. Junior Simon Shallop (Sierra Leone, West Africa/International School of Conkary) received the GNAC sportsmanship award for men's soccer.
The men's soccer program will have a new coach next season. Mount Ida Athletic Director Dr. Jacqueline Palmer has hired Joseph Campbell, Intramural Director and Head women's soccer Coach to be the new men's varsity soccer coach at Mount Ida College for the fall 2010 season. Coach Campbell is taking over as the second head coach in the history of the program replacing 21 year veteran Steve D'Arcy.
Joseph played semi-professional soccer in Ireland, his home country. He attended Mount Ida in 1993-1995 earning an Associate Degree in Exercise Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Framingham State College in 2006. He played for Coach Darcy meriting All New England First team honors in 1993, 1994 and has coached the game he loves for twelve years.
He was inducted into the Mount Ida College Hall of Fame in 2001 and was awarded the College's Coach-of-the-Year as well as the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 2001. In 2005 Coach Campbell took over the reins for Coach Darcy who had knee surgery and with his Dublin comrade and Mount Ida Hall of Famer, Aidan Byrne had a historic victory over cross town rival Lasell.
