MEN'S VOLLEYBALL SHUTS OUT LESLEY UNIVERSITY FOR THEIR THIRD WIN, An All Out Effort Gives The Mustangs Their Third Win
The Mount Ida College Men’s Volleyball team tallied their
third win of the season and their first home victory of the year
beating Lesley University 3-0 by scores of 30-18,30-19,30-20. This
would better MIC’s record to 3-11, 2-3 in the Northeast
Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA), while the Lynx fall to
0-11 in total, and 0-9 in league play.
The Mustangs took game one, 30-18, in easy fashion with senior
middle blocker Timmy Hughes (Holliston,
MA/Holliston) racking up five kills including point
30 on a hard hit ball that was uncontrolled by the Lynx. The hosts
would have the seven point advantage at the 22-14 mark and held
strong for the victory. Freshman Hayato Kanesaka (Old
Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley) would also show
consistent play with two kills giving MIC a 1-0 lead before the
switch.
The home team would chalk up another win in game two by a score of
30-19 with some outstanding individual performances. It was a close
one in the beginning with the score tied all the way up to 10-10,
but the Mustangs would go on a 7-0 run to put some distance between
the squads making it 18-11. They would eventually tire out the
competition with junior setter Bryan McMenamin
(Warminster, PA/William Tennant) putting the
exclamation point on the game with a diving one handed kill that
went over the net and landed on the line. Kanesaka would tally the
last two kills giving them the victory while Hughes continued to
dominate with seven kills.
Game three was a different story with the Lynx going ahead by as
many as five at 12-7, but the Mustangs wouldn't let up while
captain Hughes nailed two consecutive service aces making it 18-17
in favor of the hosts. Mount Ida wouldn’t look back at this
point with everyone chipping in including freshman
Colin Griffin (Concord, NH/Concord)
knocking down two kills towards the end of the game to help pull
away from the competition. Hughes would again end the match with
the final kill giving his team the 3-0 shutout winning 30-20.
The Mustangs will take the momentum south to Providence, RI to face
Johnson & Wales University this Monday at 7:00 p.m.
