MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TAKES 3-0 LOSS TO EMMANUEL COLLEGE

The Mount Ida College Men’s Volleyball team hosted Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England division member Emmanuel College tonight losing 3-0 by scores of 12-30, 11-30, and 22-30 . The Mustangs drop their overall record to 4-19, 2-8 in the NECVA while the Saints become and even .500 at 12-12; 6-2 in league play.

It was back and fourth in the beginning of game one with both squads exchanging points until the Saints commanded game play at the 8-10 mark. The Mustangs couldn’t keep pace with their opponents watching them control the momentum and pile on the points to go ahead 10-20 notching a 5-0 run. Emmanuel would go on a 9-0 run to wrap things up giving them the 1-0 lead winning 12-30. The efforts of Senior Timmy Hughes (Holliston, MA/Holliston) would go unnoticed while he generated most of the offense for his team with two solo blocks and four kills.

Game two wasn’t very close with the visitors pulling ahead early and often taking the 15-6 lead. The Mustangs would only score three more points in the second set on a service ace and two Saints errors with the visitors leading 9-18. Emmanuel would go on a 12-0 run to finish off Mount Ida winning game two by a score of 30-11 and taking the 2-0 lead in the match. Junior setter Bryan McMenamin (Warminster, PA/William Tennant) would tally two aces in the stanza.

The Mustangs would go ahead game three up by as many as four at 6-2 but the Saints would come powering back taking the 11-9 advantage and overtaking the momentum. The teams would exchange points with Emmanuel maintaining the lead 20-15 courtesy of a 7-0 run. The lead would be too large for MIC to post a comeback with the Saints closing out the 3-0 shutout for their 12th victory of the season. The Mustangs saw a good effort from freshman Gary Alvarez (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) as well.

Senior night is this Thursday for Mount Ida Men’s Volleyball to recognize Timmy Hughes and host M.I.T. for a 7:00 p.m. start.
