MEN'S VOLLEYBALL LOSES ON SENIOR NIGHT, 3-0, TO ENGINEERS

Mount Ida College would recognize senior captain and middle blocker Timmy Hughes (Holliston, MA/Holliston) for his accomplishments as a Mustang on Senior Night this evening. Hughes has been a major part of the volleyball program since he arrived on campus four years ago. He leaves MIC as the career leader in kills (1,715), kills per game (5.49), attack attempts (1,934), block assists, and total blocks. His most impressive individual match accomplishment was his 44 kills against Polytechnic University back on February 11, 2007. In 2006, 07, and 08Hughes was first in the country in kills per game and points per game. He has been the face for Mount Ida Men’s Volleyball during his career as a Mustang and will truly be missed as part of the program. His intensity, work ethic, and talent will never be forgotten while his volleyball spirit will forever roam the court at the Mount Ida Athletic Center.

The Mustangs would host Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England division number three seed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) losing 3-0 by scores of 30-18, 30-21, and 30-20. Mount Ida drops their overall record to 4-20, 2-8 in the NECVA, while the Engineers improve to 23-10 on the season, 10-2 in league play.

Game one was started with a 7-0 run by the visitors making it difficult early on the post a comeback. The Mustangs would come charging back off a Hughes kill and a slew of M.I.T. errors making it 9-5. MIC would get within two at the 10-8 mark, but unfortunately, the Engineers would pull ahead on a 5-0 run off four kills and a home hitting error up 17-10. The Mustangs would only pull within six, but that’s as close as they would get. Hughes would notch two more kills but it wouldn’t be enough while the visitors pulled away to take the 30-18 victory up 1-0 in the match.

It was a completely different story in game two with both teams exchanging points almost the entire set. The Engineers would maintain a slight advantage when they squeaked ahead up 18-15; neither team would lead by more than a single point up until the 15-15 mark. Unfortunately, the Mustangs would run out of steam while M.I.T. took command of the game going on to take the 2-0 match lead and notch the 30-21 victory. Although his team trailed, Hughes would continue to dominate tallying six kills in game one and four in the second for a total of 10.

Game three was very close early on with the Engineers holding a slight edge on the host up 8-7. But the visitors would reel off six consecutive points on six hitting errors by the Mustangs making it 13-7. M.I.T. would continue to pull away with most of their points coming off Mount Ida hitting errors chipping in with a few kills of their own. Senior Hughes wouldn’t eventually keep it respectable notching 10 of the Mustangs 18 points in game three. The visitors would close things out with a 3-0 shutout victory taking the third and final set by a score of 30-20.

The Mustangs will travel to Endicott College this Tuesday, March 25 for their second to last regular season match up in the NECVA with the festivities starting at 7:00 p.m.
