MOUNT IDA VOLLEYBALL LOSES TO NATIONALLY RANKED NEWBURY COLLEGE, 3-0
The Mount Ida College Men’s Volleyball team hosted
nationally ranked Newbury College tonight losing 3-0 in consecutive
games by scores of (15-30, 24-30, 23-30). The Mustangs would drop
their overall record to 4-17, 2-6 in Northeast Collegiate
Volleyball Association (NECVA) while the Nighthawks improved to
20-5, 7-1 in league play.
The Mustangs kept it close in game one leading by as many as three
at 6-3 early on while the Nighthawks looked flat. Unfortunately for
MIC, the visitors would start to chip away at the advantage and
eventually take over at the 10-11 mark. NC would shift into high
gear and show why they are ranked 15th in the country with some
powerful offense and tough D. Even with Mount Ida starting the
contest off on the right foot, the Nighthawks would take game one
of the match 30-15. They would record four key blocks towards the
end to deny the Mustangs of any momentum for a comeback trailing
1-0 at the first break.
Game two was very close the entire way through with the Mustangs
pulling ahead again up 5-4 early on. The Nighthawks would take over
the advantage at the 6-5 mark and maintain the lead at 10-9. But
the hosts would not go away regaining the momentum squeaking away
for a short period of time with some outstanding combination of
offense and defense from Senior middle blocker Timmy
Hughes (Holliston, MA/Holliston) reeling off two solo
blocks and two kills to reclaim the Mustang advantage. Fellow MIC
Junior middle blocker Brandon Powell (Turner,
ME/Leavitt Area) would also record a huge solo block
to help his squad stay focused. Although the score was close up
until the end, the Nighthawks took over with consecutive point
streaks to go ahead 2-0 winning game two 30-24.
The visitors would complete the shutout but the Mustangs would not
go quietly taking the early lead for the third time of the match up
8-5. The visitors would regain the energy and the advantage for
good scoring seven straight points taking over at the 21-13 mark
never to look back. MIC would not give up with Junior captain
Bryan McMenamin (Warminster, PA/William
Tennant) sacrificing his body on numerous plays to
make it respectable. The Nighthawks would wrap up game three 30-23
taking the 3-0 victory and their seventh in NECVA play.
Mount Ida will host again tomorrow with Elms College visiting
campus for a 7:00 p.m. start
