MEN'S VOLLEYBALL LOSES TO ELMS COLLEGE, 3-0
The Mount Ida College Men’s Volleyball team hosted
Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England
division member Elms College losing 3-0 by scores of (21-30, 22-30,
27-30). The Mustangs would drop to 4-18 overall, 2-7 in the
conference while the Blazers improved to 10-7 on the season, 5-2 in
league play.
In the opener, both teams stayed relatively close up until the end
of the game with Elms holding the advantage up 8-11. But the
Mustangs would come on strong with senior middle blocker
Timmy Hughes (Holliston, MA/Holliston)
notching consecutive kills along with freshman outside hitter
Shane Wilson (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester)
tallying a kill along with a Blazers hitting error to tie the game
at 14-14. Unfortunately, the visitors would reel off seven
consecutive points to pull away at 16-23 making it difficult for
the hosts to post a comeback. Elms would eventually take game one
winning 30-21 and gain the 1-0 lead in the match going into the
second set.
It would be another nail biter throughout the bulk of game two with
the Blazers maintaining the small advantage up around the 10-7
mark. They visitors would score four consecutive points to stretch
their lead to 14-7 on three errors by the Mustangs. MIC would close
the EC advantage and get within a deuce only trailing 16-14. But
the Blazers would crank up the offense and capitalize on errors by
Mount Ida going ahead by nine up 28-19 and ultimately snatch a game
two victory winning 30-22 taking the 2-0 lead.
Game three was identical to the previous two with the score very
close the entire match. There were five ties early on with Elms
eventually taking the advantage up 14-15 on a Mount Ida error. The
teams would exchange points for the next few rallies with the
Blazers upholding a small edge at 23-25. The Mustangs would push
hard on the opposition the rest of the way, but eventually were
unable to crack the momentum handing the hosts the 3-0 loss,
30-27.
Mount Ida will head to spring break next week and start back up
action at Mount Ida Athletic Center March 18th against Emmanuel
College for a 7:00 p.m. start.
