MEN'S VOLLEYBALL DROP 3-1 LOSS TO DANIEL WEBSTER
The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 loss to Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England division member Daniel Webster College Friday night by scores of 26-30, 28-30, 30-26, 24-30. The Mustangs drop to 3-5 overall while the Eagles improve to an even .500 at 3-3.
The Mustangs took an immediate 3-1 advantage capped off on a kill by senior captain Bryan McMenamin (Warminster, PA/William Tennent). The Eagles came right back taking over the lead after a 6-0 run up 6-3. The visitors would not trail for the rest of game one at this point putting together another run (5-0) to pull ahead by 13-6. After falling behind by a game high eight points, the hosts cut the lead to four at 22-18 on a kill by Thomas Belton (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central). Daniel Webster eventually rode home the 30-26 victory in game one good for a 1-0 match lead.
The visitors went ahead in game two quickly leading by a commanding seven points up 10-3. The Mustangs lost their composure letting the Eagles continue to pull away ahead14-7 after a receiving error by Belton. The hosts pulled things together and started to crawl back into game two knotting the score after a 6-0 run at 22-22 following a Daniel Webster error by junior Eric Smith (Clay, NY/Cicero/North Syracuse). Although it remained very close, the Eagles maintained the lead and finished off the 30-28 game two win, good for a 2-0 advantage in the match.
It looked like the Eagles were going to sweep the match with a game three victory, but the Mustangs had other plans. The hosts trailed 8-6 early in the set after a slew of errors that were costly for Mount Ida. It was neck and neck for the next couple of points with two ties at 13-13 and 14-14. The Mustangs eventually lost the lead but kept the score close enough for a comeback. A 10-2 run gave Mount Ida the outright 28-24 advantage towards the end of the game. The ultimately rode out the game three victory making it a 2-1 Daniel Webster match lead.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 9-7 advantage after a McMenamin kill. The score would eventually tie at 16-16, 18-18, and 19-19 until the visitors pulled ahead by three points at 22-19. It was all but over at this point while the Eagles rode out the 30-24 victory and the 3-1 match win.
Mount Ida will host neighboring rival and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) division opponent Lasell College this coming Tuesday starting at 7:00 p.m.
