MEN'S VOLLEYBALL SPLITS IN NECVA TRI-MATCH ON SATURDAY

The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team dropped their third consecutive North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) loss in the opening match of Saturday's NECVA tri-match against visiting Newbury College falling 3-0 by scores on 30-20, 30-13, and 30-18.  The Mustangs fall to 4-8 overall and remain at 2-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).  The Nighthawks improve to 14-3.

The Mustangs came out with a lot of confidence in game one taking a commanding 8-3 lead over the Nighthawks after a freshman Ross Florexil (Lake Worth, FL/Lake Worth) kill.  Mount Ida held a small advantage for the next couple of points while the visitors chipped away slowly and eventually tied the score at 14-14 after a Nighthawks kill by junior James Beck (Havre De Grace, MD/Havre De Grace).  The score continued to knot for the next few sets until Newbury pulled away by three points up 20-17 after a net violation by Mount Ida.  From there, Newbury reeled off a10-3 run to capture the 30-20 game one win up 1-0 in the match.

Game two was a whole different story with the Nighthawks jumping out to a huge 7-1 advantage after a hitting error.  Newbury continued to pound the offense going ahead 20-9 after a 13-8 run.  The Mustangs were behind by too many points to mount a comeback only mustering four more points in the set.  Newbury ultimately cruised to an easy 30-13 game two victory leading 2-0 in the match.

The Mustangs led for the opening of game three up 5-4 after a Newbury error.  The Nighthawks turned up the heat and went ahead 10-7 after a service ace by Nighthawk senior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional).  It was all but over from there while the visitors went on a tear score in bunches with no answer from Mount Ida.  The Nighthawks eventually cruised to a 30-18 game three win capturing the 3-0 match win.

The Nighthawks and visiting Pride from Regis College faced off in match two of the day's tri-match at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts. Newbury captured their second victory in arrow winning in another 3-0 blowout by scores of 30-13, 30-25, and 30-14.  The Nighthawks improve to 15-3, 7-0 in the NECVA New England division while the Pride falls to 1-14, 0-8 in the NECVA New England division.

Game one was owned by Newbury leading 9-3 after a service ace by James Beck (Havre De Grace, MD/Havre De Grace).  Nighthawk freshman Glauber DeCastro (Centerville, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth) recorded four consecutive service aces during a 5-0 run in the opening of the set.  The offensive barrage continued from Newbury jumped ahead 24-10 after multiple kills from Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and freshman Alex Amylon (Scituate, RI/Scituate).  Newbury eventually captured the 30-13 game one win leading 1-0 in the match.

Following a quick 5-0 lead by Regis after a solo block from Andrew Carroll (Natick, MA/Natick), the Nighthawks eventually pulled ahead by two up 12-10 after three consecutive errors by the Pride.  Regis hung tough keeping the score within two points down 15-13 after a Matt Talamantes (Los Angeles, CA/Viewpoint) kill for Newbury.  The Nighthawks eventually proved victorious, after a kill and service ace by Talamantes, in game two winning 30-25 good for a 2-0 match lead.

Game three was more like game one with an offensive barrage coming from the Nighthawks on the lowly Pride.  Newbury took an 11-4 lead after two consecutive service aces by sophomore Chris Chin (Brockton, MA/Brockton).  A bunch of Regis errors along with a plethora of Newbury offense gave the Nighthawks a commanding 20-11 lead after a Beck kill.  Newbury eventually would capture the 30-14 game three win and the 3-0 match victory good for a NECVA New England division win.

In the third and final match of the day the Mount Ida College men's volleyball team hosted visiting NECVA opponent Regis College in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs captured the 3-1 match victory by scores of 30-13, 30-22, 28-30, and 30-21.  Mount Ida improves to 5-8 overall and remain at 2-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).

Game one was owned by Mount Ida freshman Spencer Hastings (Olrando, FL/Timber Creak) who put on an offensive show with several kills and a handful of service aces while the Mustangs build a commanding 16-7 advantage.  Mount Ida was impressive pouring on the offense up 20-10 after a Ross Florexil (Lake Worth, FL/Lake Worth) kill.  The Mustang eventually closed out game one on two Thomas Belton (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) kills for the 30-13 game one win leading 1-0 in the match.

Mount Ida led immediately up 11-4 following a hitting error by the Pride.  The visitor crept back into the contest trailing 13-9 after a kill by Andrew Haddon (Nantucket, MA/Nantucket).  The visitors cut the lead to a deuce down 15-13 after a Thomas Paoletta (Plastow, NH/Timberlane Regional) kill.  It remained close for the next couple of points with a three point window separating the teams.  Mount Ida eventually turned up the heat with some outstanding offense from freshman Eddie Pinero (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) leading 26-20.  The Mustangs ultimately captured the game two win 30-22 up 2-0 in the final match.

Game three stayed close pretty much the entire way through with Mount Ida maintaining a small lead up 13-10 after a Florexil service ace.  The advantage for the Mustangs continued up 19-16 after a solo block by senior Shane Wilson (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester).  The hosts went up by four following a kill by freshman Josh Horrigan (Grafton, MA/Blackstone Valley Tech.) leading 24-20.  Regis hung tough tying the score at 26-26 after a service error by the Mustangs.  Regis took their first lead of game three up 29-27 after numerous errors by Mount Ida.  Following a point by the Mustangs, the Pride scored the final point to capture the 30-28 game three win down 2-1 in the match.

The Mustangs cleaned up the match in game four finding their bearings taking a 30-21 victory good for a 3-1 match win.
