MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CAPTURES 3-2 NAIL BITER OVER LYNX

The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team captured a 3-2 North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) victory over visiting Lesley University by scores of 12-30, 18-30, 30-20, 30-18, and 15-13. The Mustangs improve to 8-11 overall while the Lynx fall to 2-14.
The visitors came to play in game one building a commanding lead to open up the match up 20-5 after a slew of errors by the Mustangs to help the Lynx out. Mount Ida had no chance for a comeback at all while Lesley continued to hold the pace of play up 25-10 after a kill by Lynx senior Mike Jack (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. George's). The visitors finished off game one on a hammered kill by senior Scott Wheeler (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) capturing game one 30-12 up 1-0 in the match.
Game two stayed close in the opening with the Lynx holding a 4-1 advantage after a Mount Ida service error. The Mustangs gained their first lead of the match up 7-5 after a freshman Josh Horrigan (Grafton, MA/Blackstone Valley Regional) kill. The hosts' advantage was quickly relinquished after consecutive errors by Mount Ida giving the visitors a 13-9 lead. The Mustangs could not pull it together while the Lnyx powered a 17-9 run to round out a 30-18 game two victory up 2-0 in the match.
Mount Ida came to play in game three jumping ahead quickly up 11-5 after a service error by the visitors. The Mustangs were overpowering on offense, especially from freshman Ross Florexil (Lake Worth, FL/Lake Worth), who was electric at the net with a slew of kills and a couple of solo blocks during the set. The Mustangs piled it on up 20-12 after a pounded kill by Florexil and continued the barrage up 22-15 after another kill and block by Florexil. Mount Ida eventually rounded out game three winning 30-20 trailing 2-1 in the match.
It was all Mount Ida in game four powering an immediate 12-2 lead after a sophomore Franklin McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) kill. The Mustangs kept cruising and continued to apply the pressure to force a game five after the Lynx had held an opening 2-0 match lead. A solo block by Horrigan and a kill by junior Thomas Belton (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) gave the hosts a 25-15 advantage. The Mustangs eventually captured their 30-18 game four win knotting the match 2-2 heading into the deciding set.
Game five went down to the wire with the visitors leading 6-5 after an error by the Mustangs. Mount Ida came storming back to gain the 10-8 advantage after a solo block by Florexil. The Mustangs never relinquished the lead, although it was close at match point with the hosts up 14-13, but Mount Ida rounded out the game five win with a 15-13 victory closing the match 3-2.
The Mustangs were led by Belton with 17 kills while Florexil was amazing with 11 kills, four solo blocks, and one block assist. Freshman setter Eddie Pinero (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) dished out 33 assists while senior Shane Wilson (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester) notched 12 digs.
Mount Ida men's volleyball will host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Albertus Mangus College this coming Saturday starting at1:00 p.m.
