Mustangs Earn Double Sweep in Men’s Volleyball Home Opener

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College won six straight sets to earn back to back shutouts of visiting Lesley University and Pine Manor College as the Mustangs collected a sweep of their home opening men's volleyball doubleheader on Thursday evening at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

Game 1: Mount Ida 3, Lesley 0

The Mustangs overwhelmed the Lynx in their home opener, breaking their recently inked program record with 25 service aces and rolling by scores of 25-4, 25-11, 25-15.

Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) matched his own record of nine service aces in the match, which he also set during Mount Ida's last match against Saint Joseph's (Brooklyn). Griffenkranz accomplished the feat playing just two sets, and he had seven aces before Lesley scored a point, as he served Mount Ida to a 13-0 advantage in the opening set.

Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) added eight aces of his own and let me Mustangs with nine kills, while Griffenkranz added seven kills and Carter Amadon (Athol, Mass.) and Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.) pitched in with three kills apiece.

The Lynx (0-1) were led by three kills from senior Jason Hulteen (Galena, Ohio) and got three assists and two digs out of junior Karuna Chiemruom (Cranston, R.I.).

Mount Ida hit .500 in the opening set, making just one error on 14 attempts. The offense ran through sophomore Nathan Sprengle (Williamstown, N.J.), who put up 19 assists and had three service aces of his own. Sophomore Nate Gyampo (Providence, R.I.) added four aces, two kills and a team-high five digs.

Game 2: Mount Ida 3, Pine Manor 0

Mount Ida hosted first-year program Pine Manor in the first ever match in Gators history, and were able to win in straight sets despite a pesky Pine Manor team that looked for a historic set win.

The Mustangs got 16 kills from Southworth and 11 kills out of Griffenkranz, as they won 25-18, 25-21, and 25-17 to improve to 4-1 on the year.

The Gators scored the opening point of their program's history on a kill by Josh Williams (Hartford, Conn.), who had four kills and a service ace in the loss. Edward Cromwell (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the Gators with seven kills and eight digs, while Nathan Matthews (Vinton, Va.) assisted on 13 points.

Mount Ida got 30 assists from Sprengle and eight digs from Gyampo to lead the team defensively.

The Mustangs head back to New York for the second time this season, playing a tri-match against Sage and Keuka this Saturday in Albany.
