MOUNT IDA SOFTBALL COMPLETES FIRST CONFERENCE SWEEP OF THE SEASON AGAINST J AND W, Mustangs dominate at the plate

The Mount Ida College Softball team swept both ends their doubleheader against Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Johnson and Wales University at Pierce Field on Friday afternoon. The Mustangs took a 12-2 win in the opener and wrapped up the day with a 14-5 victory in the nightcap. MIC would improve to 3-11 overall, and an even .500 at 2-2 in the conference.

Mount Ida jumped out to an early lead in the first game, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. The Mustangs pulled ahead in the top of the fourth when a three run home run by junior Kerri Kwasek (Framingham, MA/Framingham) put the team up 7-0. Kwasek’s second three run home run of the game in the top of the fifth helped propel Mount Ida to the 12-2 victory. Kwasek was 3-for-4 with two runs and seven RBI while freshman Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamiolle Union) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the victory.

In the nightcap, Mount Ida used a two run single by freshman Kiley Jean (North Monmouth, ME/Monmouth) to take an early 3-0 lead. JWU responded in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Cotter and sophomore Kristyn Galante (Northborough, MA) to cut the lead to 3-2. Mount Ida responded with four runs in the top of the second, including a two run single by Kwasek and the team added four more in the top of the third to pull ahead 11-2. A two run single by freshman Kris Duplisea (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee) put the Mustangs ahead, 14-2. Johnson & Wales cut the lead to 14-5 in the bottom of the fourth after a two run home run by junior Kirsten Griffiths (North Haven, Conn.). That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Mount Ida took the 14-5 victory. Sophomore Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional) was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI in the win for the Mustangs.

Kwasek picked up both victories while handling the pitching duties for Mount Ida, allowing seven runs in the double header.

The Mustangs will travel to Suffolk University tomorrow for their third conference double header of the season with the first pitch of game one starting at 5:30 p.m.
